Physical Damage causing noise in earpiece.. whats broken?

Lately I have noticed that my phone is making the type of noise that speakers do when my phone is near them, but the noise is coming from the ear piece of my phone when I am in a call.
At first I thought it was a network issue but I recently discovered that if I tap the phone on my palm a few times or give it a good shake the noise stops.

For this reason I assume it is a physical problem.... a very annoying one at that.
I need to know what is broken in the phone, or what piece I need to have replaced.
Anyone know?

I would just take it into an apple store and get it replaced.

Seems to me that it is a part that shields the speaker in the earpiece from the cell radio

Slight problem with that is that I bought it online since I live in Canada.
I live close enough that I can go to the states and take it to an apple store... but since I dont have a recept, or a plan with ATT ... wont they just tell me to bug off?

no need for a reciept...

dont know about a sim card
just pick up a cheap att go phone and slide the sim card in it.

if you get it at walmart, you might even be able to return the phone after you use the simcard

or ebay a sim card

I figure I can just tell them its my brothers phone so he took the sim out to use in another phone while I took the iPhone in... but here is the big catch.
I broke my digitizer and had it repaired (not by apple)... this voids the warrenty if I am not mistake, but if I go into the apple store in hopes of a replacement will they open it up right there in the store?? Or do they have a way of knowing if it has been tampered with while in the store, or is that only if I send it back to manufacturer?

Their going to know the phone is unlocked, thus the warranty is voided.

I am going to re lock it, thats not the problem.
I'll just restore it... it's only software unlocked.
My concern is about the physical repair that was done to it.

You're going to need to have it legitimately activated, The genius bar will look you up by your apple ID, not just your phone number so you can't just pop in a prepaid sim. You have to activate it through itunes and intentionally fail a credit check. I work for at&t mobility, trust me, that’s harder to do now a days (it sends up a red flag). If they think it’s not totally legit, they will tell you to pound sand. Good luck!

Ughhhh damn it, now I need to find someone to rent out their phone number/ apple id for the day.... this blows.
