sim card switching into blackberry

I'm not a cell phone techie so, please excuse my noobishness as I explain my problem.

I am currently using a cell phone with a roger's sim card on the prepaid plan. A relative has given me a blackberry to use. I was wondering what are the implications of the change. Can I just stick my sim card into the blackberry and everything works? Are there any change in fees or service providers or plans?
Blackberries have all sorts of functions and I've heard the monthly bills are 40+ dollars, so will I not have access to these functions if I just use my old sim card?

If this has been answered elsewhere, please provide me with a link to the thread where I might find out more about this.

Thanks

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8320/4.3.1.27 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

If you're currently on Rogers Wireless Pay Go and start to use a BlackBerry while on pre paid you'll be able to use the device for voice, sms and utilize it's PIM functions. You won't have access to BIS, if you're looking for BIS access you will have to switch from pre paid to post paid.

Also, whatever you do, don't open up the browser or anything that uses data for that matter. If you don't already have a data plan, and actually use data, the overage charges are ridiculous. If you're only using the phone for placing calls and texting you'll be fine though.
