Touch users: What's your monthly "acceptable" mileage so far?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: VE9LRN

Bell won't tell us how many MB/GBs we can use with our (relatively) "unlimited" internet access. It also seems that users on the east coast might have more freedom but this could be anecdotal evidence. So, here's the question: how many MB/GBs do you get away with, on a monthly basis?

To monitor your usage, remember that on your billing date you can make a note of the amount of data used thus far by using Reverse Logistics on your Touch phone. Just pretend you want to make a phone call and dial:

##786#

Make a note of the Life Rx (received, or download) data, AND the Life Data Tx (transmitted). Add them up and that's your actual mileage. It's a good idea to set up an appointment/ reminder on your billing date so you can monitor your data use on that day and throughout the month.

I would like to hear from those who have received nasty letters or phone calls from Bell accusing them of abusing the "unlimited" plan. Remember that these guys have sold you a Ferrari with a 6-speed gearbox, but they only want you to use the first 2 or 3 gears. Sounds ridiculous, but that's the way it is. Also, please mention the province you live in as this seems to be an important factor.

I bought mine the day it was released (maybe the day before) and I've used just over 1.25 GB, most of the use is in TB Tel coverage area, but my local area is Sudbury ON.

According to my last Bell statement it was 6.7286 mb. But my phone says a lot more.

RX 908 mb
TX 75 mb

I have had the touch since Dec 27. My first Bell invoice showed 6.7286 mb of data used. I told the Bell CSR that I was sure that I did more then 6 mb of data, he told me that the data is compressed by up to 10x before being delivered to my phone. I don't know about that, but according to Bells number I can do a lot more surfing before I show up on there radar.

i think this proves that bell doesnt care how much you use...

Although at 4.9GB for one month may appear to be excessive to some. However I used about the same amount with my unlimited RIM BlackBerry plan. I also used it as a modem at home because I had no home internet. And used roughly 32GB a month. It was a grandfather plan at a hefty $100/month and ¢20/minute all the time! I had that plan for over 4 years with monthly bills ranging in the $160 range. I gave my fair share to Bell already and I am VERY happy with their service. And under 5GB is about par with Verizon's TOS. I stream on occasion But wish others wouldn't use the "slingbox" as it uses a lot of Data. I am also in Quebec. To add, my ##767# Data counter was reset automatically when I received my first invoice.

Bell caps each session of usage at $2 on a mobile phone.

I've had the touch just a little under a month
RX: 156503kb
TX: 31061kb

total of 3 months use exceed 700mb.
there was however a charge of $24 for data on a sat evening around 5.30pm and in the middle of 10plus sms.
no idea why they said it was a data charge and i m disputing.
i remembered clearly i was sms ing and msn ing so i should not be charged (for the msn).
the rep explained that if i was reading an email, and got a attachment, the attachment is data.
in effect he is telling me if i own a car, the car will become a bus if i have passenger in it.

Msn counts as data usage. Same with every other Windows device on every carrier. HOWEVER, the unlimited $7 is supposed to cover MSN data as well.

I download attachments (JPGs, PDFs, .cab files, etc.) all the time through my Gmail account and have never seen anything over my basic $5/month Unlimited Browser plan here in New Brunswick.

Attached email from Bell.
This is going to be a nightmare as bell is going to be charging whatever they want when and if they so choose.

I have never connected my Touch to be used as a modem therefore I strongly feel this charge is bogus. Whatever triggers the charge is not from my end. While the charge is small as compared to others, it is something people should be watching.

----------------------------------------
Upon full review of your email, I am pleased to assist you with your
inquiries. I do apologize that we did not respond to your email that
was sent yesterday and for any inconvenience this may have caused.

I wish to advise that on February 9th, 2008 you were charge $24.41 for
data usage. Please note this charge will only generate if your HTC
Touch was being used for tethering via the W-Modem application. I
regret to inform I am unable to provide you with details of the data
usage. I wish to clarify that this charge is valid and no adjustment
will be applied to your account for the data usage.

Also note you may can send and receive text message while tethering.

I understand you are also inquiring about the what the Unlimited 1X
Mobile Browser feature covers. Since you have the HTC Touch this
feature covers the following:

- Personal E-mail access (POP3/IMAP such as G-Mail, Sympatico, Yahoo,
Hotmail);

- Corporate E-mail/Calendar/Contacts/Tasks access via Exchange
ActiveSync;

- E-mail attachment;

- Windows Live Messenger;

- Full-HTML browsing through Internet Explorer;

- Windows Media Player.

On a final note, I am pleased to inform you that Bell Mobility offers
subscribers the possibility of adding a Roadside Assistance feature to
their service for only $5/month! It's emergency roadside assistance
anywhere in Canada and the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii).
The service follows your mobile phone and entitles you to 5 free service
calls per year, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

For your added convenience, simply reply to this e-mail and we will
gladly add it to your account. For more information on this feature, as
well as our other Value Added Services, please visit:

so Bell recognises WMP as a valid use of mobile browser

it also covers everything else you do on the device, including third party programs

It covers everything, but Bell does not recognize everything as a valid use.

Ouch, i'm about to hit 450mbs in under a month... how long until the abuse letter? :P

Personal E-mail access (POP3/IMAP such as G-Mail, Sympatico, Yahoo,
Hotmail)

Does it cover stuff outside of these four providers? Pretty much covers any account that has POP3/IMAP access right? I'm still a bit confused as to what the Unlimited Mobile Browser covers.....pretty much EVERYTHING right? as long as i don't tether.

Posted by: MacD

Wow, I can't believe this still needs to be clarified for people.

It is not limited to those 4 providers. Which is why it says "such as" indicating that they are simply examples, and not the only providers covered.

EVERYTHING is covered AS LONG AS YOU ARE NOT TETHERING TO A COMPUTER, AND ARE STILL IN CANADA Streaming of music/video is allowed but high data usage may result in your service being terminated, which is pretty easy to do if you're streaming music/video

If its done from the device, and you're in Canada, and there is no laptop near by, then you'll be covered under the unlimited feature. Don't abuse the ability to stream and you should be fine.

Agreed. It's at the point where I don't even want to respond to the same questions any longer. The info is EVERYWHERE here, just search.

Posted by: MacD

It needs to be added to the Bell FAQ Sticky, or better yet, get its own sticky.

A Sticky that said "HTC Touch users, click here first!" would be a god send.
