unlocked = works without a SIM?

I know, it seems like a stupid question. However, I'm going to be going on an overseas trip next week, and I would like to bring my phone with me to play music. I do NOT want to pay crazy roaming charges - if I get my phone unlocked, does that mean I can still use it with the SIM card removed?

Depends. Some phones will not boot up completely with the SIM card removed.

I have the w580, and when i take out my SIM card, it says please insert SIM card. I don't have my phone unlocked, so I was hoping that might help. However, I assume that is not the case?

Posted by: Baldilocks

Nope. It will still say the same regardless if unlocked or not.

Thanks so much

There are some VKP patches out there for some SE phone that allow you
"full function without sim"

What phone do you have?

Or just stick in an inactive sim, or buy one off BST for $5/10, you can always activate it later

the w580i unlocked/locked will need a sim but if u hae a w810i then it will work without sim (worked for my brother's friends' wsod after i flashed it yesterday)

The inactive SIM card will work?
I think I might have one from when I got the phone in the mail... Came with a SIM card but I didn't use it.
It being inactivated will still work??

What is a VKP patch?

Yes, and if it is from your carrier, you don't even need to unlock your phone...

just enable "flight mode" on your phone(this disables reception), or select a prohibited network.

you still have to have a sim in there.

So I still won't get charged roaming if it's in flight mode?
So if I left it as flight mode the whole trip there I'd get no reception?! I'd just like to know to make sure Has anyone tried this?

Yes, that works fine... no roaming charges...

Infact... it doesn't matter if its not in flight mode, as long as you don't pick up your phone...

I've had my phone ON in US and UK, you can even receieve text messages for free... just don't make calls/receive calls/text/internet etc...
as long as you don't use any "phone" features, its free

Precisely. As long as you don't use the phone for phone functions (I'm not sure about text messaging) you shouldn't get billed...

I have a W810i that I just got a couple weeks ago...and I tried out flight mode, and that worked for just playing music, and I had my gf call me, and the response was as if I had my phone off...So yea. Enjoy!
