Using BB abroad without BB service?

A friend wanted to buy the new Blackberry Curve Titanium to use while traveling to Europe and Asia. He's not planning on getting any service, just an unlocked 8320 Titanium. Basically he wants to pop in a sim chip he buys when he's in europe or asia and use whatever network is working over there.
Will the 8320 work ok? He likes having wifi acces for areas like airports where its sometimes free.
I know buying a BB without getting BB service is like buying a cable box to watch local channels but the phone meets a lot of requirements: light, qwerty, camera, wifi...

Hmm, I just read this on a review but don't fully understand it:
TMOBILE DOES NOT ALLOW THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE TO USE THE WIFI FUNCTIONALITY OF THE PHONE. This means if you want to Yahoo GO or Opera-mini, and the likes to work. You will have to pay for their data plan. The data plan has a monthly cost of $19.99 You can only use wifi for Blackberry's proprietary browser and UMA service. Buyers beware you will not see this advertised on any tmobile banner, website or for that matter any place where you would expect to see this VERY RELEVANT INFORMATION prior to you making the decision to purchase this phone.
Does that mean it won't work with free wifi hot spots or at home connecting to a home network (if there is no BB or t-mobile service on the phone)?

anybody help? he's thinking of pulling the trigger on eBay. I suggested my T-mobile Dash as an option but he wants something more powerful.

Just wondering - without a data plan, how do you get the Wifi service books onto it?

as long as it is unlocked the phone/sms part will work fine with a local sim card.
