W580i - Ear Piece Volume

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: jasejase

Hello...

I have gotten alot of information via this forum, but just wanted to confirm a few things.

I just bought a w580i, and love the phone, Except for the low earpiece volume. I returned it the day after i bought it, and the same issue is present on the new phone.

So it appears from my research that new acoustic files may in fact help me out... Is that correct? In addition in order to replace these files, I will need to debrand the phone before I change the acoustic settings/files... right?

And it looks like the only real problem after i debrand will be the loss of the volume control on the rocker button for the ringtone, right?

I modded my Moto V# plenty of times.. but this is my first Sony Erickson... Thanks for your help in advance.

FAR or Setool2ltor XS++ will all do the trick...

theres a FAR tut in this modding section -- Mr Yang may have a link to a tut for XS

(I prefer FAR, but thats just me)

Odd on my w580i it is one of the louder SE's i've had since the t637. Definitely louder than w610i, w810i, and w880i. But the acoustic drivers can help make it louder. Phone xs++ is a very noob friendly program to use .

Posted by: MP

but XS is still a powerful tool to have in your library!

I dont know about the stock acoustics. I dont think I even made a call on it b4 I debranded and modded it lol...

Posted by: jasejase

Thanks for all the help. Would anyone have a recommendation as to what set of acoustics will be my best bet for volume increases in the earpiece?

Thanks again..

Posted by: MP

these are the ones I like on both phones..

I saw peters "hifi" the other day somewhere, Ill bet that one is pretty good 2..

+1 ALWAYS

I like Peter's Soft Bass DRC Off

Its the least distortion, not too bass heavy and loud enough

Posted by: jasejase

awesome... Thanks again. I will try it out. I guess i can always try one, and then try another one if i don't like it...

Yes, open up XS++
Hit Connect
Turn off your phone, Hold C on your phone, plug it in
Press FSX
Hit Start FSX
Unzip your driver files
Navigate to ifs>settings>acoustics
Drag all the files from the downloaded acoustic drivers into the right side, it'll automatically overwrite the old ones.
Click Shutdown FSX

then you're done

Excellent... and http://www.mattpotter.net/K790a/Cur...20IFS%20%20.zip appears to be a crowd fave here?

Posted by: jasejase

So i downloaded xs++ 3.1... following instructions pretty well so.. Any reason why it wont connect to my W580i at this point?!

Posted by: MP

did you install the usb flash drivers?

Posted by: MP

If you have not installed them click here

everything worked great. sound in the ear piece has increased a good 30% or so!

After i quit out of XS++, i did get a little scare, when my phone didnt turn on! but i removed the battery for a couple of seconds, and tried again. worked fine! whew!

Thanks for everyones help!

Hi everyone, I am a first timer modding cellphones and thanks to you guys managed to rewrite the sound files on my w580i using XS++ and Peter´s v2 [HPM70] IFS. (Wasnt sure which sound files I was supposed to use, all I want is for the call volume to be louder).

Anyway, I noticed that when i have an mp3 playing and i slide the phone open, i hear a slight crackle sound and the audio quality changes slightly (sounds like less bass). It is not horrible, but I can hear it and I dont know if this is because of rewriting the files? I know its not normal since my brother has the same phone and this doesnt happen on his. Could it be a faulty phone or is this a result of the mod? (I dont know if it did it before the mod or not)

Im gonna get it unlocked and unbranded one of these days so if its a mod issue itll hopefully be resolved then, but id still like to change the audio files afterwards since the call volume is a bit low. BUT if its going to crackle because of the mod, ill probably live with the lower call volume.

Any guidance would be appreciated. Has this happened to anyone else?

Posted by: MP

test it.. put the original files back on it. then test it. Mine does not do that?

Posted by: gurux2

OK, I replaced them with the original ones I downloaded (not sure why there were less files). I first erased all the acoustic files and then uploaded the original files.

The result was that I could only hear anything through the call speaker, not the loud speaker. So I went back and reloaded Peter v2 [HPM70] IFS files and then the original files on top of those and the loudspeaker was working again and that fixed the problem - sort of.

The crackling sound is long gone but the problem now is that if I turn off the phone and then back on again, the sound comes out ONLY through the call/head speaker UNLESS I slide the phone open first. Once I do this, everything works perfectly unless of course I turn off and on again (have to slide open to activate sound on loudspeaker).

Does the firmware on the phone have anything to do with the acoustic files I upload? Everything seems to be working except for these bugs, am I doing something wrong or is that just the way modding is?

Posted by: MP

no thats not normal. Iv never heard of that before.

Firmware would control that kind of issue, the drivers just control the acoustics. not where they are played. the firmware picks the acoustic file to use and where to use it.

flash some new firmware.

Posted by: 4n7

@gurux2: in the files you downloaded was there a file named "handset_0_closed_call.zapf" ? if not, just rename the "handset_0_call.zapf" to "handset_0_closed_call.zapf" and place it on the phone. you should have those 2 files in your acoustics.

Posted by: MP

one thing to remember -- if you use far there are more files than can be displayed in the 2 colums. you have to make sure and select ALL of them . I prefer to start at the first one then hold down shift and use the down arrow key. it will scroll down the 2 lists you can see and then it moves the screen over and catches the files on the "2nd page"

is it me or something?
I have S500i, the earpiece is loud and clear

Posted by: MP

na the 580 has a decent volume. better than the 810. the drivers just pump it up a bit. u can have 50% set and its as loud as 100% .. Some people are def.

Posted by: gurux2

Well what I did was flash some firmware on it which ended up unbranding the phone and getting rid of the bugs in the process. Everything is working as it is supposed to now, I just have to test the earpiece volume and see if I can get it a little louder. Theres a lot of noise pollution around here so the loud earpiece volume is kind of necessary.

Unfortunately, for the moment I need to unlock the phone to test it with an actual call. I suppose I can use the secret ¨service menu¨to test the earpiece volume in the meantime. (Right, *, Left, Left, *, Left, *)

I´ve been using XS 3.1 to add the acoustic files, used Setool2 lite 1.08 to flash the firmware. I appreciate all the feedback. I´m gonna try to rewrite the acoustic files again now that i´ve got a clean install. (Still not sure why the so called *original files* you can download have about half the files that the firmware puts on the phone)

Oh, and the files I used DID NOT have ¨handset_0_closed_call.zapf¨ so hopefully thatll solve everything right there!

Posted by: Chinmonkie

I would have used Peters Soft Bass with DRM ON

Posted by: gurux2

I love when things work out.

Renaming the file worked, no more crackling. I also managed to learn how to unlock the phone as well , so the increased volume also passes the real call test. So far, so good!

The only thing left to ask is whether copying-rewriting "handset_0_call.zapf" as "handset_0_closed_call.zapf" will turn up any bugs anywhere else. I ask cos there´s that file "notedoub.cfg" that comes in with the new acoustics and I wonder if it contains any info in there that might create a conflict.

BTW, I also went ahead and copied-renamed the "farfield" files to their "closed" counterparts since I noticed the phone had them as well. Is it necessary? Anybody know what they´re for and what "notedoub.cfg" does?

Posted by: 4n7

it wont cause any bugs, it just makes the phone have the same acoustics while it is slid open or closed.

Posted by: gurux2

Do you think the farfield files need this too? I re-flashed the firmware with R8BE001 so I need to re-install the new acoustics. Luckily, I have a 67 file backup of the original files this time so I dont expect any trouble.

BTW, on another forum I read good things about Sunburst acoustic files but I didnt see them mentioned here. Any good?

If you just flashed the firmware and not the file system they should still be there. They live in the filesystem.

just look at the originals, and if it has the closed file, then yeah. I've only tried Peter's acoustics, so I'm not sure about Sunburst.

It might not be a driver issue. I had the exact same problem as you, low volume, couldn't hear anyone I talked to, that's why I returned my first w580i and got a new one. However, after that I figured out what the problem was. The phone has 1 hole on the right side which actually produces the sound, not all 4 of them, and when you talk your ear is probably blocking the hole, that's what happened to me. So, I just moved the phone around my ear and I could hear fine. Try it.

Posted by: gurux2

I will try that K_D. I ended up copying-renaming anything that was missing a ¨closed¨version and so far no troubles at all. As the original poster mentioned there was an increase of about 30% in the volume which is loud enough for someone to overhear the person i´m talking to (not desirable, but as an indication of loudness i´m satisfied.) Thanks for all the advice everyone.

i'm not having too much luck with this or even the 'extremely loud fix' version for earpiece volume... I don't notice a difference going between the stock/new acoustic/extremely loud fix...i did notice however that when playing music over the speaker that did get louder though.. any reason for this to be happening?
