I've been using Garmins Mobile XT on my Nokia with great results. I'm confused about Garmins offerings for the Curve 8310. Is there an app that works similarly without subscription fees?

No. As of now, the garmin app is a subscription, and pulls data OTA. So far, no option to install the maps on a card.
