Read before buying a locked Japanese phone

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

If you are thinking of buying a locked Japanese phone from the land of the rising sun, as of now, chances are you're going to need a SIM hack. This includes HyperSIM, NextSIM, PSS-SIM, etc.

What I don't see many people mentioning here is that once you apply the SIM hack to your own SIM card, there is a chance that some of your other phones will not be able to read your SIM card anymore.

We do know there are phones that will still accept this hacked SIM card, but some of our most beloved phones will be quite lonely now that the new Japanese competitor arrived.

For example, everyone's favourite 903SH will not be able to be used, if you're using PSS-SIM which is also the HyperSIM.

When I applied the PSS-SIM to my Rogers SIM card, I had no idea if my N95 would still accept it. At that point I was willing to give it a try and post my results though.

Post your hacked SIM, and what phone(s) that it is compatible / incompatible with, for future buyers' reference!

1st Generation PSS-SIM:
Compatible: N95-1
Incompatible: 903SH

Compatible: Iphone, TX60, Many old Samsung phones, K790a

Isn't there a way to remove the PSS-SIM if you want to use the SIM normally? Quite a few times I see people just lay it on top of their SIM with no adhesive and then stick it into the phone. That doesn't cause problems?

edit- I suppose that would only work with SIM trays and not slots (I only saw the 904SH).

Posted by: riel

But the PSS-SIM comes with an adhesive, unless the person didn't peel off the sheet first, but cut a section for the contact points. In that case, the combination would be quite thick.

There is also the risk of damaging the contact points of the PSS-SIM when taking it out, especially if the fit is tight.

I actually didn't use the adhesive on my hypersim... i just lined up my sim card with it and put it into the slot on my 920sh..
pretty tight though.. i needed tweezers to pull it out the first time

Must be locally-made clones that I'm seeing then...

The PSS-SIM I got required me to peel this sheet, which revealed the adhesive and allows it to stick to the SIM.

The ones you saw weren't like that?

Posted by: aw614

chinese ones dont have any of the sticky stuff so switching to 903sh is easy.

strangly I got my 903sh to boot into the phone with china 3gpp, but it wont connect, same with 904t, they wont connect. But it works fine on my nokia 6230b.

705p doesnt work with knockoff hypersim and china 3gpp.

on a locked w810i to cingular, I can get passed att unlock, but cannot connect too

an option is also relocking 903sh again...

No, actually. Both sides were just the circuit board.

Posted by: aw614

update: my knock off hypersim works on a locked w810i and a locked 904sh haha no problems with calling and recieving, but then on w810i it locks me out of connecting to network, gonna play with this

HyperSim didn't work with the 903SH.

Also, what phones are actually usable with the SIM hacks? Is the 904SH the only phone you can use for more than just calls?

I thought having one thread with a list of models and its level of functionality would be helpful...

The (P/SH/F/N/D/SO)905i phones all retain their functionality with HyperSIM, I think. As do all the Toshiba phones, but those are all 3G-only. Pretty much any Sharp past the 812SH all have multimedia locks (right?). Not sure about the 810/811SH.

Just go t your carrier and say that you lost your sim card. They will give you a new one.
Problem solved. Use the new one in the phones that dont accept the PSS/Hyper sim.

And the old one with the PSS SIM will be dead and you are worse off....
You can only have one SIM active at a time per phone number.

>>yangj08
Thanks for making that simple for me^^

Posted by: taniame

Okay, no offense but i don't see a point here

1st, your sim will not be affected at all if you simply REMOVE your sticker. I know PSS is sticky, but i believe it is still removable. And nextsim is definitely removable.

2nd, if you want to swich to your regular non-japanese phones, just go ask for a new one from your provider.

Really? I have 2 sim cards with the same number, and they both work :O

Hmm I thought that you could only activate one SIM card at once. You call your carrier and give them the code and they activate that one for you.

One SIM card activated per phone number.

Is it different for your carrier?

I don't see how that would make sense though. You would be able to put the two SIM cards in two phones, and they will share a line. Wouldn't they be losing a lot of money this way?

Posted by: takumi906

the only way i could see this working is if the other phone is turned off while the second one is on

I'm using..

Phone: SH905i
Unlock SIM: Hypersim iNex HS 128 chip in the middle.

If you're having signal "OUT" problem, follow this guide.

1)Put your inex/hyper256 together with your simcard inside a normal phone (etc nokia.se,motorola) Use it for a day best. Recieve calls SMS etc....
2)Take it out put it in your new phone, start up wait around few secs it will be done.
3)Make a call out and recieve call
4)Do not let your battey totally flat then charge
5)Let it run for a few days. Maybe It will OUT once or twice. Dnt worry its just new. Take it out and put it in your normal phone. And call in and out. After that put it back, It will be fine. ( Sometimes it does got OUT , due to different simcards )
6)It works Fine after that. If u never encounter OUT. Dnt do this no. 5 steps.
7)It need a few days to run smoothly Just test it u will know.

Normally if u drive on high way in high speed. It will encounter OUT but normal travelling in Train it take less than 6 sec to reconnect after u see the OUT word.
Walking distance is fine.

let me explain in details..

So i stick my sim card onto the Hypersim, used it for couple hours and no problem with the network. I decided to go buy a micro SD so i head out and bought the sd. In the process of putting it into the phone, i realized i dont have network. So i came home and researched and found out that if you have a new phone, you have to break it in..

So i pull out my sim (with the inex attached) and put it in one of my old school nokia. No Network. Then i peeled off the inex and just put the sim in, BAM.. network shows up.

Then i found the steps that benny wrote so i put my sim back onto the inex and put it in the nokia hoping it'll get signal. THen there it is, signal with the inex and my sim in the nokia.

So now im going to use the nokia for couple of days and then put it back in the SH905i.

I'll update the process

sry grammar

Thanks for sharing

Posted by: jon_jai

i'm gonna use it for 2 days including today on the Nokia and then switch it back to the 905i. If i drop out of signal again, i'll do the same procedure. After a week, i should have result if the unlock is stable or continue being unstable.

Here's again what I did today to get it working on 2G:

STEP A
1. Take the PSS/HSIM out of the SH905i.
2. Remove the PSS/HSIM from your SIM and stick it onto another random card (doesn't need to be active).
3. Insert the random inactive card with the PSS/HSIM back into your 905i.
4. Turn on the phone, go into the international dialling menu and switch from "AUTO" or "3G" to "GSM/GPRS".
5. Leave the phone on or off, doesn't matter.

STEP B
1. Your working SIM without the PSS/HS needs to be put into another 2G/3G phone.
2. Power up the phone with your original SIM and wait for reception.
3. Go into your network menu and select "GSM" instead of "3G" (applies to 3G handsets only).
4. Go into your "Manual" setup and choose your 2G network which you want to use with your SH905i (2G is the only stable one so far). When selected and connected, make a few phone calls and write some SMS.
5. Power off the phone, take out your SIM and swap your PSS/HS back over from the inactive SIM.
6. Carefully insert your PSS/HS on the original SIM into the SH905i.
7. Power UP the phone, wait for it to load and enter your Phone Code.
8. The phone should now bring up the "reception" icon on the left, and the "GSM" icon on the right.

Note: If there's no GSM icon, wait for a moment. If there is a "3G" icon on the right you haven't switched the phone to 2G successfully. Do all this again :S

Hope this helps!!!

In regard to the SH905iTV I'd say - don't touch it for now. With all these 3G issues still lingering on these phones, and the TV version being 3G ONLY, it is not a good idea.

OK, my SH905i and I are going to bed now lol "

I'm in my lecture right now i for 45 mins, i had no network because its hard to get reception in this lecture hall. I just came back from my break and after i step out, it got signal again.

Will confirm again once my lecture is done, so i will have about 1 hour of no network. I'll report if i regain signal after that.

Posted by: jon_jai

Confirm that i got signal back after my lecture.
So far after i followed the steps, it solved the "OUT" issue.

for those of you who use the SH905i with hypersim, how do you like it? Can you use the media player, camera etc?

Nah they're totally different. Takes some time getting used to, but SH905i's interface is very animated and lively =)

Posted by: Reevsaj

Cool. Can you change/download new themes? If someone could take some pics of the interface I would be really grateful
Also, my sim card contacts look like this

Would this be compatible with the PSS/Hyper sim card?

Posted by: koh-kun

Are all the 905i series from Docomo 100% functional? I remember reading about how you need to select towers or something weird like that.

I believe that problem has been dealt with in the new HyperSIM.

Posted by: jon_jai

ALl functional except internet, gps, and services from docomo.

If you have a locked 903SH, you can use your hacked SIM with it.

We should start posting our combinations out for those who are still having trouble

inex 804sh + SM32 fido sim
Compatibile: SH905i, N905i

inex 804sh + M32 fido sim
Incompatible: SH905i

Yeah we should get more in-depth and list which exact SIM hack and SIM card we are using, right down to the specifics, and their compatibility with other phones.

Hmm.. I'm currently trying to get a p905 which means I'm looking at NextSim v6 right now. My current phone is a sony ericson W810i. If I apply this sim to my 3040 Sim, will it screw over my w810i???
