MMS on Pearl without data plan ?

I just picked up a curve for my wife and was anxious to see if MMS worked without any BB data plan. It worked fine as we have the unlimited family messaging. As I understand it, it does work because of the updated software that the curve uses.

I prefer the slightly smaller pearl, but do not want to get one if it does not have the ability to send/receive MMS messages without a BB data plan. And checking the BB website, the pearl uses a different software version from the curve.

So can anyone confirm that the pearl is able to use MMS without the need of a BB data plan ? Or is it still waiting on a software upgrade to enable this ?

From reviewing the tutorials at
https://www.wireless.att.com/suppor...iverse=cingular only the Blackberry Curve can send and receive MMS without a Blackberry data feature.

I reviewed the tutorials also, and that is why I posted this thread. I've read a few places where the pearls just needs a software update to include the MMS books, like the curve has. I was hoping to find someone who knows a bit more on if/when this will happen.

It can send & receive text messages but not Picture messages as that requires data.

Has anyone heard if the Pearl will get a software update to allow picture messages?

As far as I know, you need the BB data plan for MMS.

Probably but there are never solid release dates for BB OS updates. I'd recommend visiting the Pearl forum at BlackberryForums.com for Pearl-specific info like that.

There is a new Pearl scheduled to be released soon that will have GPS capabilities build into it. Maybe this one will have the MMS capabilities.

Ok, I got MMS & MediaNet browser to work on my pearl using just the iPhone data plan.

The Mobilkom Austria [A1] 4.2.1.101 OS will load the service books necessary for MMS onto the phone. I downloaded it from here: http://members.a1.net/updateservice/bb/

After it is downloaded, run it and then delete the vendor.xml file. Then connnect your pearl to your pc & install using desktop manager.

This worked for me too!

I have the old $19.99 MediaNet plan.

ETA: I had to choose the option not to restore my settings after the update.

Would this work for anyone who wishes to use a Pearl on AT&T for just voice, text, and minor web browsing?
I am looking to move my voice usage off my company Blackberry, and am partial to BB's now, but I'd prefer to only pay for the Media Net and 200 Text Messages, not push email...

It should. I don't have a BB plan, but I can text, mms, and use internet like I could on any other phone.

My girlfriend just got a pearl and is kinda dissapointed that she can not use MMS. Would this work just for that and not the internet as she has no desire for that? We do have the unlimited messaging plan.

Yeah, it should work. It'll give you the capability for MMS and internet, but you don't have to use the internet.

She will have to have at least "pay per use data" enabled on her account. MMS requires data access to send & receive picture messages.However, she will not be charged for the data required to send & receive these messages.
If she was able to use MMS with a regular phone then she has ppu data on her line.
