, and finally, we've heard that the Nokia N95 has been approved by the carrier's powers that be (!!!) and should be available in the second quarter; no word on whether it's the standard N95 or the N95 8GB, though. How about an N96 with MediaFLO while you're at it, guys?

[Thanks, Kal]

Update: We've just heard from another tipster that the N95 in question is the original for the North American market, the N95-3. It apparently just started going through the arduous approval process last week, a testing marathon that takes roughly 400 hours -- four to six months -- to complete. By then, we'll all have 4G radios embedded directly within our brains and be living in terraformed colonies on Mars, but it was a nice thought on AT&T's part nonetheless.

Saw that. Definitely good news.

Good news, let's hope it releases this year!

Now they going to make n95 a smart phone category. No more $19.99 media max 200

I was thinking the same thing. What do you think will happen to the people who already use the N95 on the media net plan? DO you think ATT will make you guys change your plans?

Knowing att they'll just switch up over.

I doubt that seriously...are you familiar with previous at&t branded series60 phones?

Posted by: jojosung

Please enlight me about previous s60. i hate how they make smart phone data and pda more expensive. Just doesn't make sense. I also see story about ppl wit black jack being converted

The 30 dollar package (PDA/Blackberry package) applies to phones with QWERTY keypads. The N95 does not have a qwerty keypad and thus is eligible for the 15 dollar unlimited media package or the 20 dollar media max package which includes 200 text messages. This won't change if AT&T officially carries the N95.

every series 60 I had (inlcuding the E62) I've used the $19.99 media max plan....at&t doesn't recognize s60 phones as smart phones for some reason...

very curious seeing how Nokia just announced the N-96. I wonder if this will ever hit the stores for real. Sounds alot like the k850a from SE coming coming coming coming, Not coming anymore

Having used S60 phones for a while before, i fully agree with at&t.

In any case, i would'nt mind getting a N95 for fun. It'll be great when i travel to Japan and korea..uhh...i guess not..

is k850 not coming for sure? i heard it still is coming

unlocked is still the way to go. and IMO they will consider it a Smartphone and require the $30 plan. Full HTML, GPS, etc etc...they will consider it smartphone, qwerty keyboard or not.

i dont know, havent all other symbian phones with regular keys been regular phones?

Yep...3650, 6620, NGage, 6682, N75...not 1 recognized as a smartphone.

The E62 and 9300 were recognized as PDAs, you had to subscribe to a pda internet plan (although I had one and did not) but they also had a QWERTY keyboard and blackberry/enterprise email support.

I'm assuming that the N95 will not have wifi, will have 3G, and will not be described as a PDA.

Posted by: shazeh

they wont disable the wifi on the n95 will they?

Posted by: xj911

They have a history of doing so on most of there phones save for Windows Mobile phones.

I hope they don't exclude WiFi, but odds are that it will probably happen.

wow thats really crappy. could we just flash the phone back to nokia software and get the wifi back if that happens?

it's possible, but the N95 is in the testing phase (which means at&t is testing it's programing and branding) but at&t usually has there "own" model for there use which usually excludes some of the better features that unbranded phones carry.

Case in point:

1) Unbranded-3600, Branded 3650
2) Unbranded-6600, Branded 6620
3) Unbranded-6681, Branded 6682
4) Unbranded E61 (w/wifi), Branded E62 (sans WiFi)
5) Unbranded N75 (a2dp, network select), Branded (no a2dp)

We might see an N95-X for at&t, which might be a scaled down feature wise N95.

Yea, but by the same token, all those models you listed ended up with a different designation too (the N75 was the same hardware-wise, as the myriad of people who simply flashed the stock nokia firmware on it proved), so in the scenario you describe, we'd most likely end up with an N94 or an N95i or something on att. Hopefully they'll leave everything as it is.

Not to stir the pot at all, but any updates on the N95 coming? Just curious...
