Here is my current status with this problem:

OOTB 16G Iphone running on a MacPowerBook w/ Leopard.

Phone is totally dark and power button won't start device

Phone docked through USB connection

Place phone in dock

IPhone appears in Itunes as a Device

Screen on Iphone still dark

Itunes shows message that it detects an IPhone in recovery mode and suggests need to restore.

Select Restore and Update

Contacts server update

Extracts Software to Restore and Device disappears from Itunes screen.

Prepares phone for restoration and screen of IPhone comes lit with apple logo and circling wheel

Restore fails and results in unknown error (1604)

Iphone remains lit and connect to ITunes diagram appears

This has me seriously stumped.. Any geniuses out there who have come across this.

Thanks.

Please help!

Restart iTunes and try again. Let me know if that works. If not, there are plenty of things to try.

Dont panic, your phone will be fine.

like dhendriksen just said, your iphone is fine, dont panic, and there are lots of things to try.

Have you tried to reset your phone by holding home + Sleep?

First thing download ziphone, and attempt to put it in normal mode. If that doesnt work, put in recovery mode -then restore, if that doesnt work - put in DFU- then restore.

IF you still have ?s PM me.

Tried that several times. Didn't work. Please let me know other ideas.

Thanx.

what firmware is it trying it restore to?
what firmware was it on?
What version iTunes are you running?
What made the screen go dark?
Are you unlocking it?

This is troubleshooting right from Apple:

For clarity as to what is going on, I recommend you download the 1.1.4 firmware and shift/option restore vs that using dfu mode

That way you clearly target a specific fw and dfu restore

Just want to publicly thank and acknowledge Cingular#1 for his extensive help and effort in working out this problem for me. He is the genius I was looking for!
