Mogul vs Touch vs Wing

I am in the market for my first PDA/Smartphone. I'm not too concerned about the carrier or available plans as my company is paying the monthly bill.

I would like a touch screen, direct push email with exchange and wifi would be nice. So far I've narrowed it to these three based on features and reviews. But it seems like for every great review there is a terrible review.

I will obviously be using it for a phone, a considerable amount of texting, email, and internet. They all seem to have about the same thing for a camera and none really support GPS so I'm not concerned with those things. Playing music and video's is a plus, but not really something that will weigh in on the final decision.

So....any advice between the Mogul (Sprint), Touch (Sprint) or Wing (T-Mobile)?

Well that's good. Where can I get that kind of perk?

Well, your "liked" features are standard on all three phones. Might I also suggest you don't narrow yourself to Windows Mobile and actually consider some Symbian Series 60 (S60) and Symbian UIQ phones. The Nokia E Series are some decently powerful machines, many with WiFi, but none with a touch screen. When it comes to Windows Mobile, a unit without a touch screen is quite crippled, but when it comes to an OS that was never designed with a touch screen in mind, it's worth it. Speaking as having used a machine without a touch screen, you'll never miss it.
(Disclaimer: I own a T-Mobile Dash running Windows Mobile 6, I don't own any Nokia S60 devices, but I am investigating them)

The three units are equally matched. If you get a Nokia N series device, you get GPS and a web browser that's supposed to be on par with the iPhone's. Speaking from experience, the on-board browser in Windows Mobile is crap. It's slow, it's crashy, it lacks a lot of features, and doesn't scale well. It's the second worst browser I've used (next to the PSP). If you're willing to shell out an additional $40 you can get Opera Mobile (which does a great job).

If you're stuck on these three phones, and nothing else will do, I can say that ruling out the Touch is probably a good idea, since it has no physical keypad. It's slim as hell, but you sacrifice a convenient data input method for size. From here on out, it's a question of who has better coverage and do you care about EvDO vs. EDGE or overseas travel (though I'm not sure if T-Mo actually unlocks their smartphones, but you'd get service). FWIW, I have a friend who owns a Wing, it's pretty beat up, it's missing a button or two, but runs alright. All three of the devices you're looking at are made by the same manufacturer, but at least that one has a solid construction.

You could also look at AT&T. They're better than Sprint in terms of customer serivce, and AT&T has a 3G network, unlike T-Mobile. AT&T has the Tilt (you could get the 8125, the predecessor to the Tilt, AKA: HTC TyTN) which is better than the Wing, has 3G, and WiFi. You can also bring in the variety of 1900 MHz UMTS phones produced for use in the US, but not picked up by AT&T, like the Nokia N95, the N82, there's a few E series devices, and I think Motorola has one or two UIQ/Linux devices too. Those devices will work on T-Mobile's network too, but T-Mo doesn't have 3G yet, and they're apparently going to use as-yet unsupported frequencies.

why not consider ther at&t tilt? stay away from the tmobile wing its too slow.

I am currently on Sprint with my old phone. My big debate is if I want this new phone as a separate line or a new line of service. If it's a new line then I can go to any carrier, but if I keep the same line then I am stuck with Sprint. I am a little concerned with EVDO vs. 3g, especially since the wing/tmobile does not have 3g available. I will not be traveling overseas so CDMA vs GSM is not a concern either.

I am not opposed to a phone other than these three, but looking at the features that I am interested in they just seemed like the best matches. Do the nokia phones E series or S series come with the mobile office suite?

Well after much debate I ordered a Mogul. The new firmware should be out on Monday (3/10) that will enable Rev A and GPS.

Thank you both for your input.

Good choice. I hear from a lot of people that the Touch has a problem with dropping calls.

Good choice with the mogul. I just sold mine a few weeks ago to try out the iphone and I loved that phone. I had the beta version of the gps firmware and that makes it a clear winner in my eyes.

Just remember that a reset a day is probably a good thing. I had to do it like 3 times a day because I was doing so much on it.

Also check out www.ppcgeeks.com and www.forum.xda-developers.com they both contain a huge amount of knowledge about the phone as well as great applications. I would reccomend searching for WMWifiRouter (lets you stream your Ev-Do connection over wifi to let any wifi enabled device get online.)

Good luck and enjoy!
