W890i Photo Shots camparing to W880i side by side

Personally, I think the W890i looks better than W880. They are very similar and almost in the same size, BUT still W890 looks better. With bigger screen and stronger key button may be one of the reason. And the bronze (brown) metallic casing may be one bigger reason afterall.

Unboxing photos attached for you to judge

Unboxed at Plemix office

Metallic back cover removed

W890i width comparison with W880i

W890i thickness comparison with W880i

W890i front design comparison with W880i. You can see the screen is bigger and the keys are bigger and stronger. Not as thin as the W880i keys.

W890i back design comparison with W880i. This time the back cover is all metal and with matched color.

Nice photos! W880i is still the slimmest SE

nice pictures!! the w890 does look better than the w880. =)

What firmware localization do you sell on the W890i, Plemix?

Posted by: AXclass

What are the package contents?
plemix website describes phone, battery, and charger only.

WHat about
- usb cable
- headphones
- 2gb memory card ?
are these items included?

Posted by: DerekToronto

I was a little disappointed that SE didnt put a AF in the camera. Bigger keys is nice for texting tho.

Posted by: plemix.com

HI AXclass,

The package content was updated:
* 1 Sony Ericsson W890i Phone
* 1 BST-33 Battery
* 1 Data Cable
* 1 CST-75 Charger
* 1 HPM- 70 Handsfree
* 1 User's Manual
* 1 CD-Rom
and they all comes in with 2GB M2. You can see it on the color selection box. Since as for other models they come in with different memory sizes even for same color. That is why we put the memory size together with color selection box.

Hi Phone Diva, the firmware localization is really difficult to say. They come in by batches and I saw Asian and European versions. It is really difficult to control. You may ask customer service guys and find out the latest inventory and can they be able to get your preferred version at the time you need to do a purchase. Hope this can help.

Wirelessly posted (HP 211 and/or nokia N73: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.7))

other than pics
W890 works better in states because it has quad-2G and EDGE

Posted by: 3ple4

I never liked the W880i's design. The W890 is way much better!!! Too bad there's no AF nor Photo Light!

Posted by: duhmask

damn i really want to get this phone..its just that the price is a bit high..

Posted by: Phone Diva

Anyone have a US or Canadian use review?

They give it good reviews overseas, but how well does it work here on EDGE? Thanks!

Looks like Phone Arena gave it a 9/10. I think they're a US review site:

Posted by: Phone Diva

I'll be getting this phone today unless someone talks me out of it. You have a half hour, LOL! I have to go down to Devon Ave. in Chicago to get it.

Posted by: Phone Diva

I decided against it for the price. Too small and thin and no US 3G wasn't worth it. Maybe after the price drops.

Posted by: toolhead

I'm in the same boat as you Phone Diva... going back and forth on getting this phone... Only thing holding me back is the price right now... although with the amount of time I spend looking at this phone online, and my history of doing these things, I'll probably end up buying it shortly even though my current phone suits me perfectly well, and there is no way to justify spending this type of money on this phone...

I've clicked add to cart and almost bought it on plemix a few times. Might stop by MobileCityOnline's store in downtown NY tomorrow, as my work is near there anyways.

Posted by: Phone Diva

Be aware that it's SMALL. Bad for people with big fingers if you ask me. Another reason to wait unless you're going overseas, is you can't use AT&T 3G on it. Perfect for T-Mobile though, LOL! I almost got it for that because I do have a T-Mobile account, but the screen on the K850i is so much better IMO. Plus 3G and the guy had it for only $20 more.

Posted by: toolhead

just ordered one from plemix! black!

Posted by: Phone Diva

Does anyone have a review of this? I'd like to know if the sound through headphones is decent. They lowered the price on Devon Ave. so if they keep doing that, I'm getting one for T-Mobile, that's why.

Posted by: toolhead

2 in-depth reviews here:

Mine is coming tomorrow morning!

Actually I'm looking for NAM user reviews. I think those 2 sites are based overseas.

Posted by: toolhead

Yeah. I kept going back and forth on color as well. Without seeing them in person, it's REALLY difficult to decide. There are pictures of all 3 colors online in which each color looks more amazing than the next. In the end though, I've found that I always like my phones in black. Some of the pictures of the silver look quite dazzling, and I almost went for the silver. We'll see.

Phone Diva: I think phonearena.com might be based out of the US seeing as they have links on the left hand side for each US carrier. i could be wrong. in any case, i should have my phone tomorrow morning....i hope and pray will let you know how it is.

edit: for TONS of pictures, of all 3 colors, look here http://www.planete-nokia.com/phpBB2...showtopic=49149

Posted by: Phone Diva

I saw both in person and like the silver over the black. However, not many people have the black from what I understand so you may want to stick with it.

Posted by: dhabes1973

I'm torn between silver and brown, but think I will end up with the silver. The brown, in some photos, seems to have a bit of a "wine" tint to it. I don't want to spend all that money and then not love the color, whereas silver seems safe. (and black...a bit too boring).

Posted by: toolhead

first words out of my mouth when i opened it: "holy @#$% !! this thing is tiny!!"...

setting it up now...

Posted by: toolhead

Hmm.. don't seem to be able to edit my last post to add to it... so anyways... some quick observations, having come from the k550..

This phone is TINY! it looks SO small! I have it next to my k550 and while the height and width aren't much different, the thickness difference is huge! i don't have another camera to take a picture, but if you look here: http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopi...8500&start=630# you can see the w890 and k550 difference in thickness.

Also, the screen is AMAZING! you really notice this when you play the demo video or you use the camera and see how clear the picture looks on the screen.

It's going to take me a day or two to get used to the new button layout. I keep hitting the shortcut key, thinking that it's the back key, as it was on the k550, and getting annoyed. Otherwise, it appears as though you can't reassign the two soft keys in standy mode. It's media for the left key and contacts for the right key. I find this a bit annoying, as I like my down key for contacts, and would prefer to assign the right key to something else.

One thing that is great though, is being able to assign shortcuts (arrow keys or shortcut menu to specific applications, not just the "Applications". This way it's quicker to get to Opera Mini, or IM+, etc.

The email app which I use for my gmail also looks a lot nicer...

Playing music on the speakerphone seems to be pretty tinny sounding, no bass whatsoever, but then again, I only use that for the shower. Otherwise, using headphones, it sounds great as always.

If I think of anything else to post, I will. If you have any questions, ask away

Posted by: Phone Diva

I did tell you it was small, LOL!

Do you get headphones with an adapter, BTW? I forgot to look carefully at the accessories. But I usually prefer other heaphones over the boxed ones.

Posted by: toolhead

yeah it comes with headphones with an adapter. all SE's do, no? i mean, i already have a few adapters and use a pair of Shure SE210's. Shure's are AMAZING

Also, the plug it comes with is the one with the port on the other side, so you can plug the phone in to charge and plug headphones in as well ! although i think i'd be nervous of an electric surge coming through my headphones. In any case, I ordered the hbh-ds220 bluetooth headset so the phone can be charging and i can listen to my music on my shure's via bluetooth.

Posted by: Phone Diva

Thanks for the replies! I'm going to look at my other SE headphones to check for an adapter.

How does this phone work on AT&T? EDGE is getting worse here, but 3G better and better, one reason why I chose the K850i first.

So wait, the headphones should have an adapter in the box? Like an adapter from the plug that it comes with to a 2.5 jack or whatever?

I have this phone on T-Mobile in Chicago and it is fabulous - loud & clear and fast!

Posted by: Phone Diva

I drop or get static on EDGE calls around here, so much so I may not be using EDGE phones anymore. So this phone gets good reception on T-Mobile?

I found no adapter on the K850i headphones, but didn't the other poster say the one with the W890i has one?

CORRECTION: I think I misread the post, they already had the adapters.

Where did you find SE headphone adapters?

My phone is great with T-Mobile. I'm even impressed with the data speed!

I have no adapters for any headphones. Is it something you buy separately?

I got the w890i (silver) about a week ago, its a great phone, the battery life is amazing and its so fast when going onto the web, the camera is awesome, i was a bit shocked at how small it seemed but i loved the phone after i started playing with it. I was going to get the w880 but was put off by the horrible buttons, but the 890 is just soo much better.....

Another small gripe is the earphones, maybe i have big ears but i keep having them slip out of my ears as i walk, anyone else get this?

Posted by: Phone Diva

That's why I asked about adapters. I prefer certain brands. Even other types of Sony headphones, but not necessarily the ones in the box! The new ones coming out are supposed to have an adapter, but they might be expensive! HPM-77 or something like that.

You know, I keep misreading Toolhead's post. They DID say an adapter was included, but that they had several others. What kind of headphones are those and do they sell them seperately? I found some HPM 82s but the description makes them sound like they have a 3.5 jack standard, with no adapter.

Posted by: dhabes1973

Anyone finding any exceptional deals out there on the W890i? Everything I see is in the $400 neighborhood.
And how legit are all these retailers on Devin St in Chicago? Seems like they are the most prominent on the web...

Posted by: Phone Diva

They are legit but if you live here, expect to pay tax.
No deals yet, all near or even over $400 is all I see.

A little off topic, but I wonder what the W760i will be, it's got US 3G specs.

Posted by: toolhead

Damn! I set up my work email (Exchange Server) on the w890!! Push works as well! Now I have both my gmail push and work mail push! I've been carrying around a separate pda (moto q9h) just for my work email! this is awesome!

I'm still playing around with it. I have the up key as a shortcut to my email inbox. You need to switch between which account is being displayed in your inbox. Some things about this i've noticed:
* It appears that if you switch from one account to the next, push works for both accounts for a short period of time, and then only works for the account you have the mailbox switched to.
* Even if set to my work account, if the globe disappears for some reason up top, and I go under the Synchronization menu (where you set up exchange), it will show Push Inactive. If I get the globe to reappear, say by using google maps, when I close google maps, the globe disappears again and push is still inactive. However, if I hit send and receive, push becomes active again until the globe disappears for whatever reason (which it doesn't always do, just once in a while randomly).

Posted by: fryrice8850

is it active sync? or the email client that is built into the phone? cuz i had the k790a and it has the push email client "SE version" but now im using active sync with my p1 and i love it cuz it syncs with my calendar and email from exchange.

Posted by: toolhead

it's Exchange ActiveSync. You can sync email, contacts, and/or calendar. I've only synced the email so far. It seems that push doesn't stay connected well though, and that you need to manually check it now and then. You can also set it to check at intervals. I'm assuming that works. Weird since gmail push works amazing.

Posted by: fryrice8850

is it a java version of it cuz i can't seem to download it on my k790a?? if u still have the install file can u email it me?

Posted by: dhabes1973

I can't find anyone with the silver in stock (for a decent price).
Anyone having better luck?

EXACTLY! PUSH email is not fully "push" like Blackberry. This I know because if no new emails in 30min then the connection is "paused" for lack of better word. So its not your fault nor your settings.

Count on this being major change next quarter or thereafter when Microsoft releases "System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008" ... pure competition for RIM BES (which I still think will be far better).

Oddities for the w890i.

played with two different w890i's one i now own on virgin uk and the other a demo phone on 3uk, its like two totally different phones, the 3 one seems slower than my one, the camera settings seem different on the 3 one and the whole feel of the menus seems totally different....wonder what the other carriers versions are like, orange, vodafone, o2, t-mobile.....

Posted by: toolhead

has anyone found any advantages to using the built in google maps versus installing the java app? the java app uses the entire screen, whereas the built in one leaves a row at the top and bottom for icons and soft key descriptions. i feel like i prefer the java app, as it uses more of the screen.... anyone else?

Posted by: dhabes1973

Ok...so maybe I should read the instructions, but it's so much easier to just ask you guys...I just got my w890i (love it so far)...but when, when taking a picture, I try to zoom and it says that it cannot zoom in picture mode. Huh?
