Confusion: How to safely upgrade to 1.1.4 after Geohot IPSF unlock?

Okay, I've been trying to search / research as much as possible but there's so much information out there that I'm confused.

So: I have a 3.9BL iphone that is currently on 1.1.3, unlocked via the geohot IPSF clone method. As far as I can tell the unlock should still work after upgrading to 1.1.4 but I need to jailbreak and activate the phone using some method (Ziphone?).

Is this correct? And is Ziphone the best way to jailbreak and activate my phone, or are there other options?

I love all of this hacking, but the process is getting more and more muddy as different techniques and developers jump on board...
