Upset about lack of 3G

I have been less than 3 miles away from 3G for over 8 months. I thought that ATT was going to expand very quickly in 2007?? Now it is 2008 and still waiting. I left T-Mobile because of 3G, but I think I made a mistake. T-Mobile 3G maybe in my area of Northern California before ATT. Also, their cell coverage is better.
Any thoughts on 3G expansion in the next few months? If not I will switch back to T-Mobile.
Thanks

So where are you exactly? You said Northern California, but what city?

What amazes me is that cell phones are a privilege, not a right. Having access to data at your fingertips is not something you can not live without.

So, a provider is not meeting your overly optimistic high expectations.

Keep it real. People complain about data caps, unlimited XYZ. You have providers that open up to all and no system in place to monitor usage and you have a tragedy of the commons. 3g goes to 28.8 speeds in no time because people want everything and are not willing to accept responsibility for how they use this technology.

Go back to tmobile. Why you need to check all your adult decisions with a group of people who do not know you is beyond me. And while you're at it, recognize cell technology data for it is: never an acceptable substitute for a good DSL,cable, or FIOS connection. Satellite just plain stinks

i'm kinda getting aggravated with 3G too. in my town 3G is decent, but 5 minutes in any direction and it goes back to gsm. today i was using VOIP over 3G and had an important conversation. but i went to the pharmacy and lost 3G. the weird thing is i left my phone in the car since i knew in the building i would lose signal completely. phone had 3 bars when i went in rite aid, but when i came out it had lost all service. and it would not receive 3G even when i got all the way into town. i had to reboot and got full 3G signal. i had it locked on 3G cause i didnt need it randomly switching to gsm during a call and killing my call. i just wish they would blanket the area already, very frustrating.

I suggest everyone write a letter to the FCC for forcing AT&T to use valuable spectrum until two weeks ago. Also, it's a new air interface people and it's requiring lots of transport, planning etc.. Please do yourself a favor and chill out a little

Ummm isn't VoIP over 3G a TOS violation to begin with ?

Wirelessly posted (SAMSUNG-SGH-A707/1.0 SHP/VPP/R5 NetFront/3.3 SMM-MMS/1.2.0 profile/MIDP-2.0 configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.1.17.0)

It is very true the 3G coverage is not there in a lot of places, including my area. But at&t has so many benefits of being on their network, it is worth waiting for. It looks like this is going to be a big year for 3G deployments, ahead of that 3G iphone coming later this year, and if they want to catch up with Verizon and Sprints 3G networks, which at&t has been wanting to do for quite a while. Lets be patient, they are surely working on the network.

so is about 95% of the stuff i do with my phone. youtube videos violate TOS, tethering violates TOS, etc. just saying i wish they would not cherry pick towers to add 3G onto.

Roger - I thought you said that at&t's coverage in LA was great in all those other posts? Once again, at&t's coverage in LA sucks donkey nuts.

yeah LA has always been good for me. i'm talking about down here in west cali, off the 15 in the middle of the desert. we have enough 3G towers to blanket my little town. but soon as i go to the next town over there is no 3G. if i leave my house, i get 3G for 5 minutes. then its 1 hour drive with GSM only, until i get to the greater LA area, where i get 3G again. but yeah, LA is still swiss cheese with 3G, i admit it needs to get better for sure.

God I really hope so. I STILL have a Verizon line for Data, but I maybe jumping to a SERO line for Data only. The AT&T voice coverage is excellent I cannot complain about that which is why I got a line with them here.

AT&T's 3G network is absolutely pathetic down here in Texas next to San Antonio, where oddly AT&T Wireless is based i think, and Austin. The coverage is spotty and sporadic and in small pockets depending on where you are. If AT&T had the coverage Sprint or Verizon had here it'd be game over for me.
Untill that changes, I'll have to keep a data line on the other carriers that have EVDO here. AT&T better get their act together with this because Sprint is actually catching up to them voice wise here and if they do I'll drop AT&T because this push isn't happening as of now.

Ideally I'd love to have 3G in ALL of AT&T's coverage areas, and of course they would like that too, but I'll take a substantial improvement and consistent coverage here in the cities.

i say give it till later this year to see if ATT's aggressive 3G rollout really makes the difference. it has to if they are serious.

i do happen to like the 3G service combo with GSM. its nice to have GSM for longer battery life, with decent data speeds (relatively speaking), while at the same time having 3G there as well. oh and ATT really needs 3.6Mbps this year too. HSDPA is capable, but verizon and sprint is still destroying in terms of data speeds.

Tethering isn't a TOS violation. They might just bill you for it on Laptop connect at some point.
As far as I-15 goes - I don't expect much up in the high desert (Apple Valley / Victorville / Barstow).
On a good note - there does appear to be 3G coverage throughout Castaic. I actually had 3G north of Templin highway.
