ATT Tilt... what ROM are you using?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just picked up a Tilt the other day, and I really hate the OEM ROM that it comes with.

I was using WM6.1 on my previous 8525, what's a good WM6.1 ROM for the Tilt? My main concern is to not lose any features or functions that I already have with a non-ATT ROM. Will I have any problems?

I use dutty's. He has been making great roms for the tilt.

I never use cooked ROM's and I don't recommend them. Of course others feel differently. I'm using the latest official ROM for the AT&T Tilt and keep hacking the registry to my heart's content.

I've already killed PTT and am using its button to launch Voice Dialing and Voice Recorder. I have disabled the fast sleep while in a call, enabled the clock on the Today screen (so it shows with a larger font than on the title bar), and have even changed the keyboard layout to match that of the Mogul so I can type accents from the Tilt's keyboard. All that without having to resort to unapproved ROM's. As soon as I figure out how to toggle 3G off when I want to save battery by using GSM-only, I will have conquered my Tilt.

the tweaks u have done sound grt. can u post how to do some of them? i'd love to know how to keep the screen from going blank during a call.

1. Using a Registry Editor program (I use PHM Registry Editor myself), browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Drivers \ BuiltIn \ RIL.
2. There is a value named EnableFastDormantDisplayDuringCall. Change its setting from 1 to 0.
3. Press the Power off switch to turn off the display for at least five seconds. This causes the setting to be written to the flash memory so it will stick after soft resets.
4. Soft reset the phone and there it is, no more premature display off while in a call!

Wirelessly posted (HTC_TyTN_II Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6) UP.Link/6.3.1.17.0)

I just put my first cooked ROM on my tilt, after running a tweaked stock tilt since launch. Cooked ROM blows the ATT ROM out of the water!!

There really is no issue with loading cooked ROMs onto your Tilt. If you ever do have to return it, there are steps that you can take to revert back to the AT&T ROMs.

Just remember to HardSPL it first.

Would you mind elaborating a little on that. I am still on the fence on whether or not I will actually cook up my own ROM.

Thanks,
Pedro

p.s. what would the issue be by simply using one of the 'band switching' apps mentioned @ XDA to toggle 3g on/off as needed(?) Would that necessarily require you to use a non approved ROM(?) Or is the functionality just not exactly what you need(?)

So far the only one I've found that works is a replacement for the HTC Wireless Manager built into the Tilt ROM with one from the Touch, that does have a 3G toggle button. Once you do that, you loose the ability to use Wireless Manager one-handed using the navigation buttons, as the one coming from the Touch will force you to tap on the screen to use it. Thanks but no thanks.

Have you checked out Schap's Advanced Config or Kaiser Tweak? Good for common registry edits.

In Advanced Config there is an option to show the band page, its not very quick, but still easy... phone > settings > band > and select accordingly.

That setting is nowhere to be found in KaiserTweaks. As for Schap's Advanced Config, I wasted too much time looking for the darn thing... No, I'm not registering in dutty's site to download a cab.

You don't need to register on dutty's site to download.

It was asking me for a 4share account from within Windows XP, but I was able to download the file from within Ubuntu.

Schap's Advanced Config came close, but not good enough. That 10th button on the Comm Manager, toggles between 3G-only and GSM-only - no Automatic setting so no more handoffs from 3G to GSM calls.

So you want it to go 3g for data but GSM for calls?

Nope. I want to have the automatic setting for most of my usage, but if I need to conserve battery (such as when I go out and will be away from the charger for the whole day), then I want to be able to set the phone to use GSM-only. I have no use for a 3G-only option as I'm not a tetherer, but I think it makes sense to have all three possibilities.

I wonder if automatic is even possible though... I know if it gets a weak signal it'll jump to GSM, but to control it... hmmm. You might want to check out XDA-Developers to see if anyone's tried it.

Otherwise the comm manager button works for me when the battery is running low.

Question though, ever have the need for simultaneous voice and data? For your emails or anything?

Automatic is what the phone uses when you don't do any hacking. While in a call there are no handoffs from GSM to 3G but there are from 3G to GSM. In standby it can get either band, Once you use the hacked Comm Manager you loose this automatic setting.

Hmm, I can't recall if I've been on a call while doing this but I travel from DFW (3g) to Waco (GSM) quite often, and usually don't have a problem at all. Im almost positive the 3G setting just enables the 3g but still allows the GSM.

I'll give it a shot next time i get a chance, theres a pool I frequent that usually never gets 3g inside, but always outside.

I tried it. 3G calls got dropped where they normally switch to GSM.

Hmm that might be reason to jump to cooked (or at least change your radio version). I can't recall specifically but I was rocking an 8525 for almost a year and a half and jumped to the Tilt. I'll let you know in the next few days about my experience with it... still fooling around with radio versions.

I stopped trusting AT&T with radio versions after the WM6 update for the 8525. I went from having very few to no dropped calls to having plenty.

Good luck. I'll stay with the default automatic setting which has worked reliably on my Tilt. The only cooked ROM I'd install is if someone cooks up a ROM for the Treo 750 so it behaves like a normal WM phone - no Palm "enhancements", short of that, I'll never EVER install a cooked ROM.

I got addicted on my 8525 mainly because of speed and memory. Not as big of an issue on the Tilt, I just need my fix.
