An interesting post on Personafile Products, http://www.personafile.com/products claims that the iphone 2.0 final release is set to support other hardware including a 3g iphone and video capable camera. i sure hope so. the release time (may or june) cooresponds to a rumored 3g release.

There is nothing in the way of mobile OSX being a multy device mobile OS a la WM or symbian.
Whether Apple will do that is pure speculation as Apple is hard to predict.

Would not suprise me tbo, as that would make development for Apple "smartphones" much easier and cost effective.

All Speculation.

As much as I would love to see a 3g iPhone, I really hope that it isn't as soon as June. For no other reason than I just got my 16GB one.

There is no way I'll be able to sell my current phone and pony up the extra cash for another new phone that quickly. I really hope it is at least a year away.

Apple would not let a slip-up on probably their most hyped product line ever. Consider this:
It was always rumored that Apple would release some type of phone/iPod combo handset, especially after the fiasco with the ROKR. No one knew just how advanced the iPhone would be. Surely Apple would not allow non-corporate-insiders to have ANY details on future releases.

My guess is that the iPhone 2.0 (3G) would be announced at Macworld 09. Why? It will be released just in time for the originals' early adopters to grab a new one when their contract is up, thus optimizing potential profits between updater's and new adopters. AT&T and Apple have no reason to launch an iPhone with 3G now. Just because people are calling for one, does not mean Apple will launch one before they see the technology is there for it.
If I know Apple, which I should considering the time I've spent using their products, they would not just release one upgrade or two (3G and video or some such feature), they would again want to "wow" the world with the next-generation iPhone as they did with the original. Otherwise people will cry that Apple is "hyping" a small upgrade as another revolutionary device, and they would be right. No, Apple will have very many upgrades and new features ready for iPhone 2.0 with 3G, and it will be out when... well it's done.

I disagree, they release lackluster updates all the time with "a few small new features" consider the new Macbooks, the lowend uses the new chipset and system but is actually the same or a tad slower than the old lowend Macbook.

Most of the time however the updates are very nice

I think the next iPhone will be basically the same (maybe look different to differentiate it) as the current, just with 3G, for now the software will be the same across the line.

I think that having the iPhone '2' come out at the same time as the 2.0.0 firmware will help calm current iPhone customers.

Posted by: mike772

I was thinking the same, new iPhone in June would be 1 year after the iPhone Origional, current customers get software v2.0 which makes us happy. People waiting for 3G, etc. get the new iPhone 3G and are happy. win-win.

And of course some will b|tch that they brought an iPhone just 1 year ago and it should have 3G too, whaaa whaaaa whaaa

100% agreed. The only real, hard FACTS we have about the next hardware generation of the iPhone, are in the first link in my sig below...

Basically, despite what all these "analysts" say about "this new chip" or whatever, Steve Jobs seems to think it's the end of this year.

i think they should change their strategy in selling the iphone. they are taking way too long to introduce it to the rest of the world. alot of hype has die down already i think.

if they sell the 3G version unlocked i bet they will sell millions.

True, but would you want to see the price tag an unlocked 3G iPhone would have?

Plus, if they did that, it would be a while before they could do it (at least a year and a half; when the first sets of contracts in the international end finish assuming the exclusivity agreements end then, I doubt this) without being brute forced to by law.

I see a 3g phone coming out sometime by the 2-year anniversary of the international release, but it will be to keep the revenue stream from the carriers going with the first gen owners.

the price tag doesnt really matter i think. i buy unlock/unbrand phones all the time so im used to paying high prices on phones anyways.

I would almost think they would have to come out with a 3G iphone before or at the same time they allow app's to be purchased "over air" instead of just wireless. I mean you can't purchase music through the itunes store off the edge network but all of a sudden you'll be able to download applications over it... I doubt it... wouldn't surprise me one bit to see a new 3G iphone with a "most popular" or "apple favorites" app's preloaded on it.

The main difference is clear if you look at Installer apps. Unlike music (which will always be in the MBs), apps can be as small as a couple hundred KBs. That smaller footprint is easy for the EDGE network to handle in minutes.

The I-Phone didn't come about until Microsoft came up with Zune.

Even if a 3G iPhone is released soon, I'm keeping my current one.

I read that too and it simply makes sense. Apple has said 2.0 software will be final in the May June timeframe and most think a 3g iPhone is on its way then. Certainly the 3g iPhone will start with the base iphone 2.0 firmware, you might end up with 2.0.1 on said iPhone but it would be cut from a 2.0 source build.

i just got my iphone, currently i care less about the new iphones,,,

That was funny about...oh...never. Now it's just really old. Anyways, everyone seems to have overlooked a certain Intel slide from yesterday that uses iPhone graphics to depict it's upcoming "Moorestown" mobile CPU. Given a release time frame of 1-2 years, it would seem possible that Apple is waiting on the new LOW POWER CPU to launch the 3G chipset. As it stands now, there isn't too much going on to make 3G more efficient, and thus able to be included in the iPhone. A hardware refresh with a low power x86 CPU might make that possible though...

That might be the chip for iPhone 3, but there will be an iPhone 2 this year with 3G. With the Google phones and many other 3G phones coming out this year, there is no way Apple will meet their sale goals with the current generation iPhone without 3G. BTW, there are new chips that have emerged recently or in the very near future that are lower power.
