Jivetalk 1.0.5 is available

I did a search and didnt see this posted yet. Jivetalk 1.0.5 is now available. It contains most of the features of the 1.0.4 beta but this is a production release.

The beta release had support for wifi, but it only worked if you had a carrier's signal. If you were out of coverage or turned the cell radio off, the jive talk would not connect over wifi.

I am happy to report that version 1.0.5 does support a connection over wifi regardless of the carrier's network status. I have my cell radio completely turned off and IM works perfectly.

Thank you BeeJive!

Does this auto update? How do I go about updating this?

NM: found the update feature.

Go to menu and "about" then menu again and "update".

Is there a way to make it so it only uses wifi and never the data plan?

"Ability to use WIFI as the preferred connection" is ambiguous.

You can always just turn off the cell radio as the OP has confirmed it to be working.

i think wifi preferred will get what you want. I notice at home it connect over wifi as does my BES connection as well. But other than shutting off the cell radio, there is not a setting for WFI ONLY. Perhaps you can email support and they might include that in a future release.

Curios, so what reason would a person want WI-FI only? What benefit does this option allow or offer?

Very cool! I have been waiting for the Gold release with WiFi support. Thanks for posting.

Mine still wont connect with WiFi. I was really hoping they would fix this in the final WiFi version.

To make sure you won't use up data without knowing as it switched over to EDGE automatically. For example, I got wifi at home, on my way to work, it switches to edge, and when I get to work, it goes back to wifi on its own.

See post above, exactly that.

hmm, so i assume, for this reason, that the Data Plan is not unlimited and thus the reason why you would want to make sure its using Wi-Fi, correct?

Aaaah, i just thought of another reason for convenience of this Wi-Fi capability. Definitely handy when sending files over jivetalk using gtalk and aim.

Yep, I'm in Canada, data isn't cheap.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't JiveTalk just use your data plan!? So if you have Unlimited Text and Data, you are kewl, correct!?

You're correct.

Kewl... Jivetalk does seem to be about the best one I've found so far... It may be worth spending the $10 or so on it...

What about the other IM programs!? I found one called EQO that was free, and looked very decent.. The only problem is whenever the BB was holstered, it would disconnect from their server... It's a free program, but it said that it took the sent/received out of your airtime minutes... Did I just misunderstand them, and their reference to airtime minutes is a dataplan?

Can you do other things over wifi? I know in order to use the RIM browser and push mail you still have to have a BB dataplan to use these over wifi. Do you have a BB dataplan?

Airtime? Maybe out of your SMS messages?

I think it was ramble that I also used on a BB and it was free, but Jivetalk is worth the money.

I am able to use the RIM browser via wifi and I do not have a BB data plan. In fact, that is how I browse websites when I'm on a wifi network (otherwise I use Opera mini).

Well, I stand corrected.... sorry for the bad info. I was under the impression that all the RIM apps were tied to their network.

I love the bee icon for the home screen, instead of that plain looking icon they had before. Not sure if you could do it before, but I found the option to change the flashing LED light color when you got a message or alert.

I hate bugs

Actually, even if you don't have wi-fi, this new update is really nice. I love that my buddies are all larger now and their buddy icons look much better. I go back to the beta of this program, and they continually improve upon it. This is by far my fav BB program!

It wouldn't matter what it used... if you had both unlimited.

Is it just me or is this latest version 1.0.5 very unstable, at least as far as the connectivity is concerned? I can fire it up and use it actively without any trouble, but if I stop using it for a few minutes, I can no longer send or receive messages. JiveTalk thinks it's online and still connected, but messages don't go anywhere. "Ping Server" just sits there, no response; can't sign off; even "Force Shutdown" doesn't work sometimes.

The previous version seemed a lot more dependable.

Posted by: MooseBerry

Mine seems to working fine so far. I installed it 2 days ago.

Posted by: CarlGalgano

i dont use it very much either, since i am in front of a computer most of the day, but I have not noticed any issues either.

Posted by: racerx220

i get a message in red alot since i updated it saying it didnt send what i wrote then i repeat myself but my buddy tells me i sent it twice

Posted by: KG4PEQ

I might re-download it and try it again. I've got 8 days left on my trial to figure it out.

Posted by: KG4PEQ

My problem was caused by having Content Protection turned on. I don't know WHY that's causing JiveTalk to lose its connection, but when it comes down to Content Protection vs. snazzy IM client, Content Protection wins.
