Danger Server Down... Again!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So there is another outage for Danger, just like March of 2005 when it was out for a week. I just bought a Sidekick yesterday, and while I can use it like a normal phone, I cannot access any data! Perfect timing... Danger servers are down for T-Mobile because of "upgrades" to the system due to new "management."

Microsoft is totally going to screw up Danger and the Sidekick series by putting Windows Mobile on them.

In the second to last paragraph on http://www.heise.de/english/newsticker/news/104759 :

"When asked by c't about the future of the smartphone software from Danger, the company recently taken over by Microsoft, Ballmer said that Danger's strengths were in applications and services for user groups and within social networks. Microsoft would be mounting these programs and services on Windows Mobile. So Danger's Java-based operating system for the Sidekick devices has had it."

it happened not too long ago, too

over the summer i think it was, maybe
i remember calling t-mobile customer service to see if there was a problem with my sidekick, and there was a prerecorded message saying that danger's servers were down for 'maintenance'

[i]yeah expect the server to be down through the summer - they need to fix the issue A.S.A.P.

I disagree. I think for the person who uses the Sidekick (texter, AIMer) Dangers OS is better.

Microsoft is going to drill danger into the damn ground

We'll sounds like you guys love extremely locked down roms/ phone OS.

If they put WM6(which is VERY reliable) on the Sidekick, It would open so many options for users.

Nooo...some people dont need 50,000 options and programs. Some people like the basic text, IM, and internet all in a reliable package. Well pretty relaible anyways..the servers dont go down all that often.

It's not about being "locked down" as you put it. Some people (like myself) like the easy-to-use Danger OS! It just works without having to hack and mod the hell out of a device. I have owned several WM devices and it was just a pain in the *** to deal with those devices when I wanted to do something simple.

You really don't have to hack/mod a WM device. It's just that you can, and people try to get the most outta everything. Also when mods/hack are needed, it's usually the carrier's branded ROM that is the problem not the WM OS.

I'll admit WM5 and below wasn't perfect, but WM6 is near perfect IMO and is easy to use.

Also realize that it might not be an average WM6 ROM. It might be differ, like how the HTC touch is differ and easy to use.

Doesn't that sound better than having a company dictate whether you have to pay for ringtones, etc:?

I agree. I have a Wing and there are a few things that I'd change about the WM6 version. I flashed and reflashed cooked ROMs on my original Wing but decided against that for the second because I wanna be able to hard reser the phone and restore the stock T-Mobile ROM whenever I wanted since you can't do that if you do a hardSPL(which is necessary to run most recent WM6 and 6.1 ROMs). I love the flexibility, functionality and customizability of WM6.

I decided I would not go back to windows mobile (too much aggravation)
I keep drooling over sidekicks, but now that Microsoft bought them out... I am debating whether or not to try them out.

I stopped using windows mobile for the same reason.

Now is the time to buy because the current line of sidekicks are untouched by microsoft. You probably can't say the same about the next generation of sidekicks...

i jumped ship already, havent looked back. the server was the main thing. 4 years of being a sidekick user.

I don't see how everyone is going nuts that Danger inc is gonne be run to the ground... if you guys haven't noticed it was already on the floor freaking bleeding. Danger would losing substantial amount of money and quite frankly the people behind just aren't putting the attention into the business as its needed.

I hope the os is left intact as well, with only improvements made. Thats what made sidekick very easy to use and quite frankly it still tops in ease and functions compared to alot of phones. But it has its disadvantages, constant syncing needed to server with Danger server being flaky, the browser is in need of work (WM 6.1 SP browser beats the lx in this department), hardware needs to be ramped up and up to par with todays devices, and much more.

As long MS improve on the danger os I think they can do very financially well. Pump some money in to R&D for Danger and it can be brought to life. Hopefully they get some people that can truly bring out its potential and not simply ride on a falling rollercoaster untill the time comes to sell the business before sinking with it.

I haven't seen the WM 6.1 browser yet, but for usability, the browser in my SK3 kicks ***. That's about the only thing I really do like about the SK3. What other mobile browser actually has forward and back buttons, and a find text on page function?

As for the rest...if T-Mobile offered an all you can eat data, SMS, IM package for a buck a day for WM6 devices, I'd go back faster than something really fast

How about a "find text on page" function? And sorry, I dicked around with it. Entering a URL is a pain in the a55.
Really, I really wanted to like the iPhone, but it's just not functional enough.

Sidekick users primarily do 3 things -- Call, text/aim, and go on the internet. Danger's OS does that perfectly fine. We don't need fancy organizational tools and such from a Windows Mobile OS. I am not entirely sure that the new Sidekicks (rumored Gekko and Aspen, though not substantiated) will have Windows Mobile. I certainly hope not.
