Would it be a web based email account? The only thing I can think of is a SMS notification when you receive an email. I think Yahoo Mail an dHotmail as such a feature

You can set it up with Sprint. I set it up to where I get a text everytime I get an email to my sprint address. I believe that you can set it up with other email providers.

Do you use versamail? you can edit the prefs to alert you when the mail arrives

Text the word "EMAIL" to 777468 and download sprint mobile email client. I use that to manage my google and work account. You can set it up to make a beep or alaram everytime you get a message. Just like a blackberry.
