How to disable, or avoid, data usage on S710?

I don’t have a data plan and refuse to shell out another penny to my service provider (AT&T). My HTC S710 is, however, enabled with WI-FI and I log-on here and there around the city to open networks. I understand that the phone might switch to GPRS if the WI-FI is out of range (I can’t tell when this happens). How do I control my phone so that I ONLY use WI-FI on my terms and GPRS on my terms? I don’t want to disable GPRS completely because it might come in handy – but I don’t want to be accidently charged for data because I moved a few feet with my phone, went out of range, and enabled GPRS.

Please advise what I can do to avoid costly GPRS charges. Thanks.

There is a program called MoDaCo NoData. This allows you to disable the data connection on the phone at your choosing. Disabling the data connection through the communication manager requires disabling the phone radio. If you do that, you cannot receive calls. NoData has no effect on your ability to receive calls.

Thanks, I deleted my post

Awesome! Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction. I’m so happy to be free of AT&T’s insidious plan to squeeze every penny from my wallet. Somehow I think it’s not an accident that phones don’t have the ability to switch off GPRS built-in.

Uh, yeah... they make their money off of you using their services like data. So why in the world would they provide you a way to turn that off? It simply would not make business sense to offer your customers a way to avoid using your services.

If you really have a need to access data on your mobile device, their data plans are not that unreasonable. If you only need it occassionally, then they will make a small fortune off of you.

You are paying for the convenience of having access to data regardless of where you are, as long as you have a cellular signal.
