i think some phones should have a lifetime rating, eg: how long they last with the current technology, how well they were built, will they exceed their warrenty lifetime..
anyway just a thought..
so what do you think the average lifetime of a mobile phone is? With all the new technology coming available i would say maybe 18 months to 2 years.

With most phones I'd say 1yr. min. to 18 months. But it also varies with how people use their phone, how often the drop it etc... I've had people drop my Ocean atleast 10 times a week since I've had it. I've had it for about 10months and it's still going strong.

well in terms of how well built they were etc, phones should last quite a while (2 years + for the average user) but considering the people on this forum, they tend to last about half a year before they get sold off
i think it highly depends on the person who owns the phone.

Also depends of amount of stuff you load onto phone, Like me i use it for alot of things, EG watching movies that i dont want to buy.. Other stuff.. It also depends on phone model.. Old phones or tight strong phones (maybe could use Sony ericsson w810i as an examp) can last longer.
I had 2 Sony ericsson w810i for over 2 years, never broke but one did tend to get quite slow, then sold them both.

i was gonna say with how many variables there are that can make the lifetime really short or extremely long that if you did an average most people i think would find that there phones lifespan isnt similar to the average.

well, I would hope with the common-ness of 3 year contracts that a phone could last 3 years. Granted, after 3 years the technology would be a bit dated, but with average or careful use, I don't see why a phone should last less than this.
(this is not accounting for tech-nerd types who need the latest technology, or for the accident prone...)

I think that with the rapid advancement of technology in the mobile world, this widow will get smaller and smaller.
At the moment, I thing 1yr to 2 yrs is a safe estimate for the life cycle of the phones, but as they get more advanced this will shrink to 6 months on average.
I tend to shorten the life span of my gadgets by dropping them on hard surfaces. . . admittedly, I am not the best test subject.
That being said however, I have family members who are still using old Nokia phones I have handed down to them more than 5-6 years ago.

Unlike cars, where they say "they don't make them like they used to" all the time, referring to how few cars last long enough, phones lately seem to have improved. My first phones, nokia and erricson, were great. However, they were entirely of a cheap plastic that didn't even feel good. My Moto V600 still had a sortof cheap feel to it, but it was amazingly durable, and it lasted me quite a while. Then I got a cheap HTC StrTrk. That would be my outlier as it died in 1 year on me. My new phone now is a Samsung Blackjack II and I love it. It feels so sturdy, and I expect it to last for quite a while. I also have a MOTOFONE on the way (5 dollar phone woo! lol) that I hear will withstand anything.
On the other side though, the technology in any phone will last a good year, then you'll want a new one. The phone will still probably function properly, but you'll be the only one with last year's model, and you'll feel alone with your old phone. I get a phone when I feel I need a new one though. If it still serves its purpose to me, I keep using it until it stops working how I want it to. I run it into the ground, so to speak. This MOTOFONE that I have coming is simply because its cheap and I want to phone to bring on the beach or skiing or just to toss around.

I used my first phone that was of motorola model and user till 5 year without any problem in sense of parts or any other type, Now I am using lg for year with out any problem,
I think the life of any phone depends on How you use it?

My family and I tend to change our phones after every 2-year contract is over.
I think this current N82 I have can last me over 3-4 years with good care. It is a durable candybar and it seems like Xenon flash is still rare to find on cameraphones. I really don't need a camphone over 3MP, and 5MP with 30FPS video looks good enough to last awhile even without optical zoom.
I don't really get "emotionally attached" to any of them no matter how great these phones are to me, and will be willing to sell them if another great one comes around. My oldest phone I currently have still works (T616), but most of the older ones I've either lost it or given away.
I'm willing to give myself a 1-year timeframe now that technology is moving so fast...
