Just wondering, so many post, a lot of talking, and so many different problems, it makes me scared to even think about updating my 1.1.3 iphone to 1.1.4.
I am sure there are many people that need guidance to get the update done right with no problems.
In addition, so far I did not see a good tutorial with detailed information on how to do it properly.
Is there is any body kind enough to do this for us. I would do it my self , just like I did with the 1.1.3 update a while back, I made a detailed tutorial for who ever needs it, and I did a lot of reading back then.
I been reading a lot for past 2 weeks about the 1.1.4 update and so far is a 50% problems and 50% no problems.
I just want to apologize if I am asking for too much but that is what this forum is for people to share the knowledge with each other.

my iphone was an OTB 1.0.2

And now this is the info that I have on my iphone

Version 1.1.3 (4A93)
Modem Firmware 04.03.13_G
Boot Loader 3.9
jail broken activated and unlocked
every thing is working no prblems

Thanks,

Heres your tutorial:

1. Put in DFU mode and restore it to 1.1.4.
2. Setup in iTunes as a NEW phone.
3. Run ZiPhone and click "do it all".
4. Wait 4 minutes and enjoy your phone.

The people that have problems, are having problems because they are upgrading instead of restoring 1.1.4, and they are not setting it up as a new phone. When you restore a previous backup it installs all your old files from the jailbroken 1.1.3. Those files don't always play well with 1.1.4.

There you go, your advanced tutorial ;-)

+1

Of the entire lengthy history of iPhone unlocking, hacking and jailbreaking, 1.1.4 is currently the easiest in terms of what you have to do. It's easier than jailbreaking a 1.0.2 phone, and BY FAR less time consuming than 1.1.1.

Thanks for the reply just one more question about the APPS like summer board and customize and weDict are they compatible with 1.1.4 or I need to do extra steps to make it work.

Thanks,

There is a compatibility patch for summerboard, and a general compatibility patch that will let you install applications that are firmware version specific.

Also you do not have to set your phone up as a new phone... once the update is done and it tells you that your sim card is not supported close itunes, then run ziphone for unlock, activate and jailbreak. Once that is done re-open itunes, and it will ask you to restore from a backup of your old info, or start as a new phone. Either option will work fine.

Yeah, upgrading instead of restoring worked for me too, but just to play it safe, I would restore rather than upgrade. Just pointing it out incase you think upgrading will brick your phone. If you do upgrade instead, be sure to remove all 3rd party apps first. Of course, in theory, this would be the same as restoring anyway...but to each his own

Here we go, that is what I am talking about, one-person say restore and the other saying update and one person saying set as new phone and the other saying restore the old info. That what get people confused and make mistakes, and get into problems. I think it should be one tutorial and it should make as sticky so people can follow it.

Thanks,

Or you can use common sense...If you want the absolute cleanest install, RESTORE and SET AS NEW PHONE.

It's impossible to have just one guide, because some people have OTB phones that is fine upgrading instead of restoring, while others value their contacts and SMS messages over a phone that works completely without bugs.

The problem is nobody knows exactly why things don't operate and why things don't work all the time. It just seems like things work better when you don't upgrade and don't restore your old settings.

The same logic goes with upgrading operating systems on your home computer. It always works better with clean format. Everyone has different cofigurations on their PC with different software installed. There are too many variables...If you want it to work the best, start from scratch.

Sanos, not to discredit you or anything, but I have both seen and personally experienced bugs that are associated with restoring a back up. That doesn't mean it will happen everytime, but my advice is to set it up as a new phone.

@ the op. You will get dozens of opinions here. My advice, don't restore your backup. I have done it dozens of times, and it is always smoother starting fresh. Good luck.

^x2...or actually 3. clean is always the way to go...no matter what.

I do agree with both of you dhendriksen & Drakkhen, that I need to start from scratch, and that is the best way to go, because that what I do with my computer every time that have a problem. I format it and start fresh, my point was there are too many posts with the same questions, and I thought it would be best to do a guide for OTB with 4.6-boot loader and old phones with the 3.9 boot loader.

Thanks,
