any word???

preferably the 39327 zip code?

How expensive is the update? What all is involved?
Do you think this will be the solution to rural broadband?

I think the land lines will become a thing of the past. It seems like the only place they're any good is in urban areas..

I would love to know about any areas in MS, especially Starkville if any has any info for Mississippi.

jackson has it for sure... and it's amazing how much faster than edge it actually is. i think the coast has it

You can usually pick it up just south of Memphis. Tupelo is still a no go

I noticed that Helio wireless has 3G listed for Oxford, but I think they are using Sprint towers maybe?

I moved back to Tupelo after living in Memphis for a year, and I really miss 3G...

As far as the expense of the update.. do you mean for us or for ATT?

We just need a new phone/sim card (maybe) and a data plan, if you don't have one.

As for using it to replace broadband... I suppose something is better than nothing! That's assuming 3G makes it to rural areas before broadband.

I would be hard pressed to decide on replacing my comcast connection with 3G. Yes, it is fast, but not nearly the consistant 6-8 mbps that my comcast line allows. I would heavily consider it though, if prices come down on the dedicated laptop line.

i seen a new tower going up in meridian it's different that older towers made of metal. it's just a cement column pole, it doesn't have any antenna's on it yet, but i've noticed this kind of tower in jackson, where they have 3G... I'm not sure if this is what kind of tower it is, but it's possible..

The tower isn't what matters. Unless AT&T really needs another tower for better coverage, they have no reason to add one for 3G. They can just add extra antennae to an existing site. And there's no guarantee that it's an AT&T site. Could be Cellular South, Sprint, T-Mobile, or maybe even Alltel, if they're licensed for Meridian.

Of course, I'd love to see 3G expand in this area. Tuscaloosa still doesn't have it, even though VZW has had EVDO here for a year and a half.

And speaking of Jackson, I noticed last Friday that my V3xx was bouncing between WCDMA and GSM while I was sitting still downtown. Not sure what was going on.

i wonder how long it will be before they get it along I-20 between jackson/meridian.. What is this LTE i've been hearing about? Are they going to start upgrading networks to this instead of 3G or what?

LTE stands for Long Term Evolution. It's a 4G standard that will offer faster data than UMTS/WCDMA. I believe AT&T has projected 2012 as the time when their LTE network will be up on the 700 MHz band.

At this point, I wouldn't worry about LTE. Even if they have something running by 2012, the current network isn't going anywhere any time soon.

so LTE will be running off the 700 mhz band after tv switches to digital next year??? I guess they'll have to start putting up new towers again for that? I just hope that the smaller cities, and rural areas still get 3g or 4g. hopefully they won't stop expanding 3g and just start focusing on upgrading the large cities to 4g leaving us behind once again like the landline did in the broadband expansion...
