Who has paid their $99/$299 fee yet?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I registered the same hour the SDK was posted, but never got the invite yet to pay the $99 to be able to publish. Did anyone get approved yet? Please let me know.

I was under the impression that you didn't have to pay the fee if you were going to release your apps as open-source. I could be wrong about that though. I also registered the same day, got the approval email and downloaded the SDK, but I have yet to receive a "bill" so to speak.

I was under the impression that you have to pay the fee to access the SDK and all of the resources. Hmm.. does anyone know? I'd love play around with the SDK but I just did a serious shopping spree so I'm going to have to wait a while if I have to pay up for it.

Edit: I found my answer in the FAQ.
Quote:
1. The $99 standard program one-time fee is not necessary at the moment. It will allow you tether your iPhone to your Mac and test out your programs on your own iPhone. It will also provide you with a digital certificate so you can submit and distribute your applications to the iTunes Apps store in June when it becomes available.
2. The current, free version of the SDK allows you to code your applications and run them on the built-in emulator. You won't be able to transfer your built applications to your iPhone, with one exception: only if you are still using firmware 1.1.2 or older and are jailbreaked.

I signed up for the $299 developer program, but I didn't get the invitation to pay / complete the registration yet either.

The $99 gets you the ability to test your apps on an actual iPhone or iPod Touch tethered to the Mac. Without the $99 certificate, you can only test using the iPhone simulator, which doesn't support OpenGL ES or the accelerometer. I haven't read of a single person getting appoved, and I've been searching.

Erica got approved, but that's not a surprise... Anyways, I got this email today from Apple:

Quote:
Dear Registered iPhone Developer,

Thank you for expressing interest in the iPhone Developer Program. We have received your enrollment request. As this time, the iPhone Developer Program is available to a limited number of developers and we plan to expand during the beta period. We will contact you again regarding your enrollment status at the appropriate time.

Thank you for applying.

Best regards,

You spent $2500 just on a MacBook?

That is easily done if you get a 17" MacBookPro

Posted by: dizzyj

15" macbook pro + apple care + tax. I was going to get a 17 untill I saw one in person. they are stupid big. I'd never be able to cary it around in a backpack.

Posted by: BethanyBoo

Yes, but macbooks and macbook pros are two different laptops!

I just received my rejection email too. It doesn't really matter to me. I'm ok with using the emulator for now. I just want to get my feet wet with it. I really wish they had the interface builder ready, though.

Oh, I agree, the MB and MNPros are two different beasts... but I just deduced it was a MBPro based on the price.

And I wouldn't call the e-mail a "rejection", but a "deferral". I also got the same e-mail, but it basically just says they have filled their "limited" beta, and will be expanding in the future.

No worries on my end, as the simulator is working just fine for me.

It is funny, as other Mac related boards are on fire with developers angry about being "rejected".

Ugh... got my "not just yet buddy" letter from Apple. Oh well, let's hope for a leaked 2.0 beta firmware or I'll just play with the Simulator in the meantime. I just hope they will eventually give everyone the opportunity and get accepted into the developer program.

I think until the beta period is over they are going to keep membership somewhat limited. After we get what they deem to be the final SDK I don't see them turning anyone down that wants to give them $99. I am not sure even Apple expected to get the response they are getting. The guys over at KPCB, the ones doing the $100 million iFund, had a running bet over how many applications they were going to get in the first 30 days. The highest estimate anyone made for the 30 days was exceeded in the first 36 HOURS.

You guys/gals might want to recheck your emails... because I just got this one from Apple:

Very cool. Seems like they are just slowly starting to roll things out.

Hoping to get a similar e-mail soon, as my first app is comign along quite nicely

Well... looks like I'm official, and should be getting the 2.0 beta + developer's kit + digital signature (to post my apps on iTunes this summer) later this week! Oddly enough I had no choices to change the shipping method.

Quote:
iPhone Developer Program Standard
Part Number: D4521G/A
1 $99.00 $99.00
Estimated Ship: Within 24 hours
Delivered within 5 business days after shipping
Order Subtotal: $99.00
Estimated Tax: $7.67
Free Shipping: $0.00
Estimated Total: $106.67

Nowhere was it clearly stated whether this is a yearly subscription fee, or a true one-time fee to join the program. Maybe the documentation they send me will shed more light on this.

Cool! What app are you working on? Or is it a secret?

Odd ... I would have thought this to be a purely digital download.

First app I am working on is a port of my Palm OS version of BlackJack Solitaire. I am moving a bunch of my other programs over too, and have plans for some new ones.... All I need is the time now

Posted by: BethanyBoo

I still haven't seen that email and I haven't seen any posts about it on the iPhone blogs I visit. I'm crossing my fingers that I get it!

This e-mail went out today....

Thank you again for applying to the iPhone Developer Program. We’re thrilled with the tremendous response we've received. We have many more requests than we can serve during this initial beta period, so we must limit the Program at this time. We plan to expand it during the beta period, and we will contact you regarding your enrollment status at the appropriate time. We appreciate your patience.

As sort of a follow up to my previous post, I figured it'd be nice to share with all of you the information I received from Apple so far (after registering for the beta). You can view it here: [linky]

Posted by: JerryNY

I appreciate you giving more info on the process but be careful because Apple's NDA might not allow you to say all that much. I'm just saying because Apple can be very strict and I'd hate to see someone get screwed for being helpful. At least if you do so don't have an easy about me page on your website to make tracking you down easy or give the docs to someone else to post.

TUAW has an interesting write up about those that got accepted:
TUAW Story

Not sure I like the bricking part... I would much rather still be able to sue my phone while testing my apps on it.
