W580i Memory Stick Problems

I have a SE W580i with a SD 4GB memory stick. I try to load music on it but when I exceed approximately 1.5 – 1.6 GB the phone reacts by cycling on and off. Below this limit the phone/MS works w/o problem. The only way I’ve found to fix it is to completely reformat the MS, losing all stored music. Can anyone explain or provide fix. Both phone and Win XP recognize the MS and do not indicate any flaws or problems. I don’t know exact limit since I load music during various sessions and don’t have time to experiment 1 KB at a time.

You will prolly get a better response in the regular SE thread (not the FAQ)
can some one move this?
Is it a brand name mem stick or an ebay item?
Did you format it in the phone? --Iv always found that formating it in the phone is the best way to get the phone to like it the best.
BTW its a M2 not an SD -- 580 wont accept an SD card.

This forum looked like the place to put it but by all means, this thread can be moved.
The SD referred to SanDisk. It is indeed M2 memory which btw I purchased from ebay.
The cycling condition persists whether I load music via Disc2Phone or File Transfer.
I will try your suggestion regarding formatting in the phone.
Thank you

Could the problem be that the music is a combination of mp3's and m4a's?

I believe I am getting closer to understanding the problem. I had over 1 gb loaded and the cycling started again. Then I removed all long tracks. And am now at 1 gb and no problems. Indications are that the phone FS has a difficult time with long tracks, (Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick is out). I will experiment more and post results. Any insight by others is welcome.

I would be led to believe that the card is fake. Most of the cards sold on eBay are usually fake. How much memory does the card say that it has?

All systems, (Win XP, Phone, Disc2Phone, etc.) confirm a 4gb M2. I added more music and am up to 1.2 gb (Memory Stick Free: 2816 Mb). I will need to get back home before I can add more and perhaps get beyond 2 or 3 gb. Will post results.
Regardless the MS looks authentic. This I realize can be deceptive. Ebay vendor had many sales with 99% rating.

Who's the seller? I'm looking for another M2 card and won't use Amazon.

Further experimentation has raised the music content to 1.7 gb the most I've ever had. Throughout I have not loaded overly large music tracks, (i.e. >10mb). I make the following conclusions:
4gb M2 may be fake but it is functional and I can copy from/to without problem. I don't think it is the problem.
I assume it is the Wotan R8BE001 CID52 firmware that I used to debrand that has difficulty with large music tracks. Some that I tried were on the order of 62 mb. This firmware would go into failure before even launching walkman.
Perhaps a SE guru can shed light on the technical peculiarities of the software and why large music files are a problem.

62meg music file is LARGE. Iv never loaded anything over 8 meg. So maybe thats it..

My W580i: debranded with Asia firmware. 8gig mem stick, 4.5 gigs of music loaded. Some tracks are 2hrs/120megs. No problem in playback. Only problem is if I disconnect the headset during playback, the phone will sometimes not be able to read the card and I will have to turn it off/on.
Have you tried long music files bigger than 60 megs on the original 512meg mem card the phone comes with? If it works then it's your 4 gig card. If it doesn't then it's either the firmware or the memory card.
Also try loading the music using the USB cord connected to the phone alone. It takes forever, but it's never given me problems.
I was lucky as I got in on the rogers deal to get the free 8gig card when I got my phone.

Purchased w580 from ATT. Did not come with a MS micro. Have not added any files lately but my current playlist continues to work flawlessly. Have not attempted to load any large music files. Will not take the risk again. The 8 gig sounds great. I've still to get up to 2 gig on my 4g card. And yes have tried loading large music via both disc2phone and file transfer to no avail.

Sounds like a bad card.
