car keyed.... aftermath?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

My integra got keyed either late last night or early this morning.... the guy did a pretty decent job running it from my passenger door all the way to the read panel... and it's deep... i can see metal almost throughout the length of the scratch.... wish i could have caught the ******* that did this....

so now i'm left with the decision on how to get this fixed.... i know repainting the door and panel is going to cost roughly $1k (i've had to do this once before) but should I pay out of my own pocket or should I report this to my insurance and have them pay for it? my deductible should be around $500 but i'm not sure how much my premium would go up b/c of this incident....

it really frustrates me to see my car like this, especially when all the salt and snow is flying around while i drive...what do you think is a good course of action?

have u claimed this kinda thing with insurance before?

if ut straped for cash, then claim. insurnace wont go up that muchor even at all depending on who ur with.

if u can get by, just repair it out of pocket. good luck

check first with your car insurance to see if they'd cover it, then ask the local paint shop how much it would be if you paid out of pocket.

so you're thinking that if you caught the guy who did this, you'd end up keying his body but with a scalpel?? an eye for an eye??

Posted by: helzbane

i've never claimed anything with my insurance company before (state farm).... do insurance companies usually just pay to have that section repainted or would they actually pay to have the panel repainted?

although that is a tempting idea to return the favour, i think i'll just get the guy to pay for the damages instead....

sounds like too much trouble!! Why not spray paint something that would infuriate everyone?? Like spray paint f*** Americans, all to Allah and do that on all 4 sides of his vehicle. see how long his vehicle stays in one piece when he drives to the next block!

Personally I would pay out of my own pocket. However, it might or might not be cheaper to go through insurance though.

I see your location is Toronto/Ottawa. Did this happen in Toronto or Ottawa?? I know someone scratched up my car in downtown Toronto. I guess there's a lot of haters here in T.O.

Don't think that would work very well, since he's located in Canada...lol.

I feel for you, I know what it's like. Someone keyed my mom's car (which I detail every other weekend myself, so it's like a second car to me) while parked at work. The punk who did it keyed a couple of other cars too. There was metal showing in certain parts but it doesn't sound as bad as your Integra. I wouldn't worry about trying to get revenge on the punk(s) who keyed your car. I'd like to think karma will come back to them. You don't want to stoop down to their level either

I just used touch up paint since my mom is not picky and the car is not exactly new. In retrospect, I should have claimed it under the comprehensive portion of the insurance policy anyway. It shouldn't raise your rates as it is not your fault. That aside it all depends on your deductible and how much the repair will be when deciding whether to pay out of pocket or make a claim.

Good luck!

sigh....i know how u feel man. Of course it depends on the situation/condition or the car and yourself. If the car is old and you don't have a custom paint job or anything, try to get it done somewhere cheap; then again you get what you pay for and this is very true when it comes to bodywork and paint.

After going through so many things with my car, I regret getting a nice car. Seems that people can't stand to see me driving a nice car that I paid out of my own pocket for. So my advice to all you youth lookin to get a nice car: if you don't have a garage to park it in, or you don't live in a nice neighbourhood, don't bother getting a nice car. It's just too much of a hassle dealing with all the haters.

yeah, i think i'm going to just pay out of my own pocket... so far, it looks like my deductible will cover most of the cost already so there really isn't a point to go through insurance.... and i'm guessing i might need to file a police report in order to have state farm cover it.....

i had thought of using touch up paint, but the one I got from the delearship is significantly darker than the silver on my car.... i don't get how most touch up paint from dealerships always look so different compared to the coat on the cars....

..that i have to agree. Same for the touch up paint for my car too. But it has to do with wear and tear. The car colour will wear down after being in the rain/snow/sun for x# of years.

I used to work in insurance. This kind of claim will NOT effect your insurance rates!! This is a non-ratable claim..This is a comprehensive claim, classified as vandalism. Your comprehensive deductible applies, and NOT your collision deductible.

I know that in the state of California, insurance companies can't bump up rates just because your car was vandalized, unless it happens more than 3 times a year. What you can do is go to a shop and have them write a higher estimate so that it can cover your deductible.

oh i didn't know that.... i guess i'll pull up my policy to check that deductible value.... i would still need to file a police report in order to claim with insurance, right?

My car got keyed at a mall a few years back....and I filed it with insurance. I paid a $100 deductible and it was fixed. My premium didn't change at all because my insurance agent said it was not a moving violation, it was considered vandalism, not something you could have prevented. It doesn't hurt to go talk to your agent. If it's going to make your premiums go up, then pay out of pocket. Add up what you'd be paying in difference. $1,000 is hard to choke up for something you weren't responsible for. I'd go through insurance, that's what it's there for.

why not? isn't that what it's there for? you pay monthly for a reason.

to the OP, also, adding to what i said before, get estimates from different places before you go to insurance. then they can give you an accurate estimate if at all what your insurance would go up. it shouldn't considering it wasn't a moving violation at all.

Nope. I never had to file a police report. The insurance company will send an adjuster out to look at your car and they can plainly see it's vandalism and they will claim it under your comprehensive. At least that's what they did with my jeep.

Wirelessly posted (P990: Opera/9.50 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.0.9751/286; U; en))

No, no police report. Ask insurance about it.

just an update:

I got a couple quotes from some body shops and found out the damage was actually much worse... came up to at least $1200... in the 2 weeks time, a car must have grazed their bumper against that side and put a couple more deep scratches and dents.... my car must be cursed...

so I ended up filing a claim with insurance and they were pretty good about it.... they even let me choose a dealership to fix it.... now i just have to drop off the car and get a rental....

so if somebody hits ur car while it was parked in a parking lot but u weren't there to see it would that be consideried collision damage or comprehensive?

This might be a good read for you. Sounds like exactly what you were asking about. Looks like hit and run is covered under UIM coverage, then collision if you don't carry UIM coverage.
