I am staring at my brand new unactivated iPhone with 1.1.4 on it. I have iTunes up on another monitor at the activation screen. I am wondering what the real pro's are for closing iTunes and unlocking/jailbraking the phone. From what I understand:

1. Jailbreaking
a. leaves the phone locked to AT&T (fine, I am an AT&T customer already)
b. makes me use the $15 Media unlimited
c. can use iTunes for updates without bricking
d. no visual voicemail
e. no 3rd party apps

2. Unlocking
a. Can use AT&T or T-Mobile or any GSM phone company
b. makes me use the $15 Media unlimited for AT&T
c. cannot use iTunes for updates as may cause bricking
d. no visual voicemail
e. many 3rd party apps

3. Activate with iTunes
a. automatic 2 year activation agreement
b. makes me use the $20 iPhone data plan
c. can use iTunes for updates without bricking
d. visual voicemail works
e. no 3rd party apps

Now, I just read about the pwnage development to add 3rd party apps to the locked phone, sounds great but not sure when it will be released.

Are there any other pro's or con's that I haven't listed that would make a difference in choosing?

Your three options really are:

1. Jailbreak & Unlock
a. Useable with any GSM Carrier's voice/data plan (data optional)
b. Third party apps and mods galore
c. No visual voicemail
d. No upgrading via iTunes (til unlock/jailbreakable confirmation)
e. Warranty repairs/exchanges tricky/impossible

2. Jailbreak Only
a. Useable only wth 2 year iPhone AT&T plan
b. Visual voicemail
c. Third party apps and mods galore
d. No upgrading via iTunes (until jailbreakable confirmation)
e. Partial fear of no warranty repairs/exchanges since jb'ing is easier to undo than unlocking

3. No Jailbreak, No Unlock
a. Useable only wth 2 year iPhone AT&T plan
b. Visual voicemail
c. Ability to upgrade via iTunes with no worries
d. No fear of not being able to get in-warranty repairs or exchanges
e. No "free" (background running) third party apps
f. No satisfaction of knowing you've cheated the system

OK maybe f. under option 3 is a bit of an opinion but you get the idea. Choosing between these three options is like choosing between the blue and red pills in the movie The Matrix...

People died by choosing the wrong pill....

I decided to go ahead and wait for pwnage to be released as it will still allow the visual voicemail to work along with unsigned applications. Seems the best of both worlds.

Thanks for the input though.

Just so you know. I went through the activation agreed to the 2yr contract. After I did that I jailbroke the phone so I have 3rd party apps. Best of both worlds until we get the app store.
