3G charges when not using internet?

This is a pretty basic question, but am I being charged at data rates if my phone is showing a 3G or Edge icon but I am not using the internet? I do not have a data plan on my phone, and have no intention of using the internet, but I see a little 3G icon in the top corner sometimes, and also the little E (guessing Edge) icon.

If I make a call while the 3G icon is displayed, does that mean I am going to be charged for data? or is it simply an indicator that 3G is available and I can get on the internet using 3G? I don't want to be charged for data if my phone is sitting on my desk, or if I am on a regular phone call.

Thanks.

Oh the 3G means your in an area that allows you to use 3G speed.

The little E means emergency.

The 'E' stands for 'Edge,' not emergency. Edge is the slower data connection used when 3G coverage is not available.
