What's the best, cheapest music phone?

i hate my current phone, and i'm looking into buying a new one. what i want is reletively simple, since i don't really care about internet, email, or text-messaging features (ie-qwerty keyboard). all i want is a phone that can double as a music player. however, i want an actual music player that can sort by artist, create playlists, etc (basically as close to an ipod as possible). i would also like a large storage capacity, but it seems like most phones have a cap at 2 gb microsd cards. it would be nice if the phone had a regular headphone jack (but i think very few do).

anyone have any suggestions? i know there are music phones like the iphone and nokia n95, but these are really expensive to buy.

Motorola ROKR E2 comes to mind. Nice interface, nice screen (one of the nicest QVGA), standard 3.5mm jack, and it takes SD cards so memory is cheap. Cheap phone, cheap memory, excellent music quality (it scored better than Sony Ericsson when tested against them).

pretty much every phone ever made now plays mp3s. so its a pretty big selection. SE has some nice music phones. s40 nokia phones are decent. etc

The difference is that most of them don't have decent mp3 players (Samsung, old Motorolas, old Nokias), most of them lack a 3.5mm jack, and most of them either a) have a limit on memory and/or b)use more expensive kinds. Thats mainly what makes the ROKR so cheap. In my experience there is a huge difference between a phone be able to play mp3's and a phone actually being usable for mp3s.

exactly. my current phone (nokia 6133) doesn't have the 3.5mm jack (which i guess isn't necessary if the phone comes with good headphones), only supports a 2gb expansion card, and the music player is terrible (it's basically an ipod shuffle)

W810i is the first thing that comes to mind. Great size, weight, and price(I think it's free with most contracts). The music player is one of the better ones on most mobiles and it comes with an adapter for your 3.5mm headphones. Many say it has great audio quality, but what would I know, my ears have lost their finesse...

Most of the SE walkman range (even the lower end) are great music phones, some of the new mid range nokia's are pretty good music phones then look at some of the other makes, motorolas, samsung etc.....

I had a W490. It is cheap and the sound quality is good. It takes a Micro SD so storage is decent. Beyond that it is a pretty basic phone. The camera quality is pretty poor, though.

looks like our OP is MIA

i've looked at the sony walkmans, and they seem really nice. however, most of them seem to have a limit at a 2gb microsd card.

The W810i goes up to 8gigs or more I believe.

Nokia N75 is a great music phone. It was $50 after rebate but now its more. V3XX is good but music player is not as good as N75 but serviceable. Sorry no experience with others.

W series SE phones are perfect for mp3 player phones. They do have a headphone adapter, but the headphones that come with the phone are usually more than adequate enough. Memory is not capped at 2gb, as there are 4 and 8gb cards available for the phone. Older W series take MS DUO PRO, newer take M2 I believe. Micro SD is not applicable.

The W580i has the shake function to change to the next song, and that is a cool little feature. You can easily manage your music on the W series phones, creating playlists, etc. and often times you can find them for cheap or free with a contract as mentioned above.

The original poster never mentioned what provider they have, but I don't think that any CDMA provider in the US currently has any SE phones in their line up. You would need to either have AT&T, T-Mobile, Centennial or a local GSM provider to use an SE phone.
