Data plans for Blackberry..

can i use the unlimited data plan, the $15 one for a blackberry, or would i have to add one of the specific blackberry plans?

Posted by: NoLimitz80

Do you have at&t already? Basically if you have a normal phone now just add on the $15 data plan now and plop your sim into the BB.

Posted by: mrc00l88

yea i have att already.. if i just add the $15 plan, then i wouldnt have all of the features, right? so i might as well spend 15 more and get the bb plan.

Posted by: celtictech

It depends on which Blackberry you plan to use. If you just have the $15 media net data & you put your sim into the curve, you will be able to use voice, text, mms & the medianet browser. However if you put your sim into the pearl, you will only be able to use voice & text messages. If you require push email you will need the Blackberry data plan.

To get the max use of the BB and its features, you really should get the BB dataplan.

Yup. That's why they exist.

Some people have been able to get MediaNet only working with their BB's but it does not work in all situations for some reason.

True.. I have the unlimited Data plan for my Blackjack, but when I pop the sim into my Pearl it says 'Data Refused'.

I have the old MediaWorks package with text, mms, and unlimited internet. Are you saying the internet won't work on the Pearl?

I'm buying a Pearl from someone today, and I assumed I could put in the right settings to use mms/internet like on any other phone.

The pearl will only work for voice & text. You will not be able to use data or Picture messaging.

It was discussed in this thread:

It works if you upgrade the firmware. From that thread:

The Mobilkom Austria [A1] 4.2.1.101 OS will load the service books necessary for MMS onto the phone. I downloaded it from here: http://members.a1.net/updateservice/bb/

After it is downloaded, run it and then delete the vendor.xml file. Then connnect your pearl to your pc & install using desktop manager.

I called att to find out if I can drop they BB data and get the unlimited media package as I have no need for the push email and their blackberry browser. They told me that it is not possible, they don't have the function on their computers...but to me it sounds like "we want your extra $15 bucks"

I think they should be none the wiser...but is there a way for them to track if I'm using a BB or a regular phone?

Any GSM carrier can identify the IMEI of the phone you are currently using. They may or may not have the actual phone model associated with that IMEI in their database. If it is an AT&T model, they can even tell the color if there are more than one color.

How is this information transfered? Isn't not written in the simcard.

Sorry I'm not sure I've understood everything so I may be repeating some questions. The BB Curve email has not been very useful for me. However, I do like the full keyboard. Is it possible for me to do the following:
1. Call AT&T tell them I'm transferring my SIM to a regular phone
2. Cancel my BIS plan, then add on the $20 Medianet plan (for the regular phone)
3. Keep the SIM with MediaNet plan in my Curve
4. Be able to SMS, MMS, use the browser, and Gmail app on the Curve instead using the MediaNet data plan?

Different question: Can I transfer my BB Curve SIM card to a Samsung Sync (temporarily) and use the BIS plan to browse the web on the Sync without incurring a data charge? Can the Sync use the BIS data plan?

Posted by: celtictech

I believe the answer is yes to all of the above, except the medianet data is $15 not $20.

The SIM card information is phone-independent. The phone itself transmits its identity each time you connect to a GSM network. Go to this site and see what phone model shows for your number: http://selfcare.mycingular.net:8082/scgui/init.jsp

Change to a different phone model, if possible, and check again. All of this has been covered many times. When you go to order ringtones, download applications, games or wallpaper, your phone model is displayed. How do you think that the sites find out?

Doesn't work for me.
I guess the point of my question was to know if att can find out that you are using unlimited media for $15 rather than the BB plan and force you to change.

I don't think they would notice unless you used a lot of data or something, so that someone actually looks at your account.

Yes, this is exactly what I'm doing. My account says I've still got a V9, but I've been using my Curve for the past 3 weeks with ZERO problems.

I'm able to get Opera Mini to work but I can't get the Google mobile apps working. It also says "edge" on my Curve now instead of "GSM." Did you have to change any of the tcp settings? I currently have the CINGULAR.WAP apn settings.

Sorry meant that it says "edge" instead of "EDGE."

edit: Got everything working. Had to reset the application settings using Desktop Manager.

Nope, just put my SIM in and it all worked.

Same for me. I didn't have to change any settings.

I have been using my curve for about three months without a bb data plan. I have the grandfathered MEW1 on my account that I have had for years. Both my media net and regular browser, as well as my gmail app, gmaps, yahoo, and ramble. I was surprised to see it working when I popped my sim into it but all is well. It looks like those who say that it won't work, won't be able to say that anymore. I wonder why this isn't the case for the pearl?

Posted by: ItismejsONFIRE

Is there anyway to get push/exchange mail with the correct data plan. I would happily give up 3G from my Blackjack I for better battery life. If it doesn't work I guess I'll just get a new moto Q or BJ2.

Posted by: peaceout

With the BB plan, you can get push mail from exchange if you have the OWA (Outlook Web Access) set up. It's not perfect but it works out okay.
