AT&T Tilt broken screen

My sister's boyfriend gave me his Tilt because he bought a Blackberry. Long story, he broke the first Tilt, they replaced it for him and he broke it again and he was told it would cost $500 to repair... so he bought the new phone and gave me the Tilt for free. So here's the deal: it will charge and turn on.. but only stays on for a few seconds. The LCD is cracked... pretty obvious. However, I was wondering if there was another problem since the phone won't stay on or if it's typical for it to turn off with just a broken screen. This is basically the sequence of events:
Hit the power button, a green LED on the left of the ear piece lights up and the phone vibrates for a second.
The screen then lights up but doesn't display anything obviously... other then the black liquid and white back lighting.
The screen stays on for about 15 seconds, shuts off, the keyboard lights up for a VERY quick second and then that's it... nothing else.
I'm wondering if I should try and find a replacement screen or if there is something else wrong with it. I saw the screen on phoneystore.com a while back but the site has said it's down for maintenance every other time I checked.
Other Info - I took the back cover off and above and slightly to the right of the camera is a black dot that says "VOID".
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Phone will shut down without a SIM card.
If you got the skill you could find a tilt screen and replace it.
Do belive that "void" sticker is indicating that it is a refurbished replacement so one cannot send it back to a store for refund. Cannot really say since Ive always bought another new phone or return it for refund.

The void sticker is there so they can tell if you have taken it apart which would void the warranty. It is obvious that the warranty is already void as they wanted to charge him. I thought i had seen some screens floating around on ebay. I would give it a shot, nothing to lose.

I cracked the screen on my 8525 some time ago and went to the local cell phone store (not the AT&T store but a retailer) and they charged me $90 + labor to replace it. I think it was around $130 total.

cool.. thanks for the replies.
addiarmadar: i noticed that when i was bored one morning waiting to go to work. i took the SIM out of my phone and put it in there... the phone stayed on and played what seemed to be the startup sound and then an alarm... then eventually turned off again. i'm trying to find the charger to plug it in... maybe the battery is drained again.
-- yeah, i saw a couple sites that had the screen for under $100 bucks. i am hoping that is the only issue because if it is then i got a pretty sweet deal on a nice phone. it will make a nice replacement for my SE W810i
thanks again for the help... will keep you posted.

my screen cracked for no reason. Warranty dept says it M?UST be something that I did, dropped it on the ground or impacted the screen with something that would have damaged it. Not the case, was using it one min, put it in my pocket and the next time I went to use it the screen was broken. I would admit it if I did something to cause this, but I know this is not a possibility. It was in my pocket for 20 min and I was sitting down the whole time and did not do anything to bump the phone. So I guess if taking the phone out of my pocket could break the screen it is my fault. Anyway, My choices are buy a new phone, buy a new screen for $80 from china and attempt the install myself, or pay about 180 for someone to repair it for me.
