Moving on from a W810i - can't find happiness!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I once had a W810i. Brilliant phone, excellent camera/size/battery life/music player.

The fastport started to go a bit funny after repeated dropping so when upgrade came along I got a W850i. Rubbish. Gave it to my sister, managed to get out of my o2 contract and went to Voda Uk (big mistake) and got a W910i.

It's good, but it's not as good as my w810i which I miss. Is there any SE phone out there that is as good? Seems SE don't want to do quality hybrid cam/music phones any more. K series are too big and the W series don't have autofocus cam modules.

Anyone got any ideas what may be a good option for me to try? I'm even thinking of going back to a W810i as they are cheap now and I know they are great.

W610 maybe?

Posted by: Gallois

This looks a really great find. I can also get it for £69.99 on voda prepay at the moment. Interface on Youtube looks fast and style looks good. Thanks for the advice.

Posted by: break-r

IF you still want AF camera then you should go back to a w810.
SE is seperating their walkman phones from their cybershot phones and only implementing autofocus into their cybershot line

Posted by: Gallois

Naming convention of SE phones is sometimes confusing. W610 does not look like a lower model than W810. It has flash menus and walkman 2.0. I'm tempted by it even though the camera unit doesn't seem quite as good as the w810.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the w810 was one of the last walkman phones with a good autofocus camera..

I know the w960 has an autofocus camera, but its absolute crap

Posted by: glorfingal

I did just that - went back. I had a w810 a year or so ago, went to a k800, k810,
w880, Moto RaZr2 V8, Nokia 6500 classic - none of them as good a complete package
as the w810i so ..... bought a broken (screen) one from ebay, fixed it and love it to bits.

My advice - get another w810i - simple :-)

K850i is awesome, it has a great media player, and it's not too big either.

810 is an excellent little phone. BUT the 790 isnt really that much bigger and its definitely an upgrade(minus the quadband)

why not get another 810?

Posted by: br0pbr0p

Recently got a K850 to replace my W810.

The W810 was hard to find replacement for because most of the new SE phone actually has a crappier camera (2.0 without Auto Focus and Flash). The upgrade to 3.2 MP wasn't significant enough to warrant the much bigger phone. Then came the K850, the 5MP camera justifies the increase in size, not weird shape like the K800/790 and like all SE phones, great battery life.

Posted by: toolhead

i'm with you man, the w810 is a solid phone. i went with the k550 and flashed it to the w610 firmware (bc the w610 wasn't out yet and i wanted the better music player with megabass)... the w610/k550 is slimmer than the w810 (you notice the difference), has a newer music player with album art, trackID, an rss reader, and some other nice upgrades...

i'm looking now what to upgrade to again. i LOVE the looks/size of the w890, and am seriously considering getting one, but i can't justify the price especially with the camera being a downgrade...

Apart from the w610i, there is nothing that may please you as much as your old w810. You have faced the problem many SE people have been going through for the past year...there just aren't any cool phones to buy!

the decent W810 successor will be C702 CyberShot
quad-2G
3mpx cam with AF

should try the k790a out.

although it is thicker, it has a much nicer screen (higher resolution and larger) along with as mentioned, a better camera.

I find the music abilities are very good, although not walkman branded.

I agree.. I dont regret the jump from 810 to 790 one bit. I have the phone in my pocket most of the time and not notice it any more than the 810.

Posted by: Heavy Fluid

I jumped from the W810i to the K790a, it was a good jump. W810i is a solid phone, all the way around. Probably one of the best phones I have ever owned. K790a is awesome though. Excellent camera, better screen, music abilities are good enough to use, and a great feel in your hand. The back is almost like a smooth rubbery texture.

I liked K790a, esp after mod'ed with K810 housing kit, but earpiece sucked too much after that
I should not try that "quad-band" GDFS mod, it's too dangerous to touch, caused the phone:
got "no network" error
after getting fixed, streaming real is no longer working
since X1 will be released in several months, and I heard T-Mobile will grab W760 (will have NA1700 instead of 1900) and couple of SE phones, that I use E61/N73/S500 for time being
no more 2G phones to buy (no NA1700 band 3G phones is considered as 2G phones)

every time you say that im gonna follow up with --- streaming never worked for me (iv tried to work around it with proxy servers and nothing works). Providers are filtering that content now to force you to watch there video. but ya, dont do the quadband hack . Its pointless unless your k790 was a prototype "brown" phone.

Posted by: christomapher

T-Mobile selling a Sony Ericsson phone? I'd be surprised.

Posted by: Shroomster

what about the w880i? I just saw it doesn't have AF but damnit all, I'd buy it for the sake of having a stainless steel cover....

Does anyone know whether W610i can set mp3 to a SMS msg alert tone and ring tone??
I know i'm a noob at this but just wondering whether I should get w610i or not.?

Was trolling the boards to replace my w810 and came across this post. Thanks for the info, will keep it for another year and see what happens. Thanks guys.

yes it does. http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/pro...10i?cc=us&lc=en

Good lookin phone and about the same as the 810 (well it is the same w/ a2dp), but Its got the fast port on the side tho.. I still think that stupid.

I wonder if its DB2020 or 3150 ?

Id buy one as a 810 replacement.

Does the k850 have auto-focus? That was a huge benefit of the w810i to me as well.

Yes the K850i is Cybershot, Autofocus, Xenon Flash for photos, LED light for videos.

To the OP since you are in the UK, Either the K810i or K850i would be best for you.

I just went back to my w810i from my Blackberry Curve. The curve is a pretty good phone but it's not my w810. I missed it too much! I thought it earpiece was going bad because it was really low but it turns out it was really dusty. I cleaned it out and it's good as new.

I think I'm going to wait for a SE that will work on T-Mobile's future 3g network. I like the k850 but it doesn't support the frequency that t-mobile will use for 3g.

Posted by: glorfingal

I had the K850 for a couple of months and had nothing but grief ... staying with my
trusty little w810i until I find something to equal it :-)

Posted by: MP

that 610 looks like it could be a good phone.

I strongly agree. I'm pretty close to getting one as a "beater"...I love the way it looks and the camera doesn't seem to be too much of a step down from the w810 (both have af but many have found the quality to be a little less than the w810). It still seems a little pricey at the moment though (as does the w810 new, unlocked), so I may wait a bit longer -

Posted by: mrweiser

I had a K550i flashed to a W610i for a while and I can tell you they are very good phones. The port on the side is kinda goofy, but you gotta put it somewhere. @MattsK790a- they are DB2020. The camera takes really good pics outside in daylight. Inside it's pretty bad. As far as pricing goes, for some reason the K550i is cheaper than the W610i and it adds a camera cover. Flash it to a W610i and you get the best of both worlds for less money. My.02

Posted by: anotheran

it took me a long time to switch my W810i to something else. I still love that phone. It has a faster camera (turning on and focussing) than both the K850i and K790a and the photos are good enough for my blogs and sometimes printing. out of SE's inventory, I think the W810i is still the phone for me.

I think im gonna hut down a 550 and try it out...

I'm actually searching for a "deal" on an unlocked/unbranded w810i as a backup/weekend phone...

I was kinda looking at the k850i, but got spooked by all the horror stories around here about "Sophia".

Posted by: tszefr

Thanks for the war stories guys... Had my W810i for almost a year and a half. Nice to know what might or might not be a worthy successor. Galls me that they issue garbage.

My junk example is W580i that I got from my sister. After perhaps 4 weeks usage she had 6 cracked keys (not that she knew or cared), couldn't get ole Praviotti for a ring tone, and went to a stinking N2610 that I bought for $9.95 because she likes it better! Now that it is repaired, unlocked, and debranded and I can put her music, perhaps she will want it back after I show her all it will do.

What it won't do though is perform as well in RF department, and I suspect it will never be as sturdy. Battery won't run as long either. Better her to have so-called contract extended than me. I feel fortunate to have picked the W810i. Absolutely loving push mail tool now that I found and installed the right crypto cert so it will run. Going to put W580i back in box so I don't break it before I hand it back.

Posted by: Ryan1524

I moved to an iPhone from my W810i. But if I HAD to stay within SE, I think my pick would be the W910i or W580i.

Posted by: mindless_fool

I love my W890 ...just my 2 cents...just wait til they come down in price, i got mine for 330 but i got lucky....if only it had auto focus, but i dont use the camera much, music player is an improvement over the w810 and i use A2DP stereo bluetooth headset for music, sounds great. Best build quality ive seen in a while from SE (they have been slipping a bit in that part i find)

Posted by: blitz911

the k850i, pretty much brought back the same feeling i had with the w810..but with much more improvements and upgrades...excellent 5mp cam, long battery life, great UI, great music/video player and helluva lot better reception(i've yet to experience no bars)...love the k850i...

One thing to consider is that reception on the K550i or W610i is not steady while on the go. When I sometimes use them in the car, I have to hold it up just so that the reception won't fade.

Posted by: blitz911

just like the w880i, the antenna is on the bottom back of the phone..i always had problems with reception whenever i held it there while talking or texting...so i started holding them at the top...felt weird but reception was lil better...

SE W890i is a great A2 phone - DB3150 (like the K850i, W910, W760i). However its got a slower JVM performance regarding 2D/3D gaming.

SE W810i was undoubtedly SE's BEST walkman phone worldwide. Sure the W910 is nice but doesn't sell as well worldwide, yet. W810i just had everything that ppl wanted from the K750i & W800 without voiding warranty hacking components and firmware swaps. plus the slightly larger screen just did it!

However ... after using my W810i - probably THE best all around phone I've ever used, there were things that bugged me over time. I'm an old school phone geek. That is to say I try to use my phone for EVERYTHING it has. Gaming eventually lead to creaks, especially pressing UP/Left or diagonal in that area! The is an sneaky lack of shell support in that (and UP/RIGHT) region. Another thing is JVM limitations. I LOVE to surf on my phone, and even with EDGE, I hardly saw a difference from GPRS - only when using O.M. Of course surfing on Opera and listening to music was amazing! But I could do those along with jumping to play a game. Limitation of the JVM is that you can ONLY run ONE java midlet at a time. In short, I left the W810i because I had to learn BlackBerry from the end user perspective as I was elected SME. I soon caved and got a K790a.

Now I caution against the K850i for ONLY the reason that its a "fragile" phone. Branded firmware is VERY stable. But the shell, you MUST (thats not NEED, WANT, SHOULD, or BETTER, but *MUST*) have a case - you'll regret it once you drop it like I did .

My suggestion. W610i for the following reasons.
* Everything you loved of the W810i & more.
* Same 2MP AF camera (2 LEDS!) its the SAME cam module!
* JVM updated. You can use more than 1 midlet at a time!
* M2 card support. Slightly faster and if you UPGRADE later this year, its compatible.
* Cheap upgrade comparative (when shopping new) vs: K790a/810/850i.
* Flash Lite/Theme support (XS++ free setting up Flash Themes) = BONUS!
K850i cannot at the moment use Flash Themes (just the display of them), as DB3150 has yet to be cracked. K790a has NO Flash theme support!
* A2DP support. Yes you can stream stereo Audio.
* Play Button! Man you have NO IDEA how much I'm beginning to MISS this now that I'm using the HPM-75's. It was no big deal not being there on the K850i when I used the HBH-970's ... but those 970's are annoying (the LOOP)! This gives you the best of BOTH worlds.

Future possible upgrade ... W760i its a slider but GPS is built in. 3.2MP cam but no AF (but PhotoFix should help - no night shots though without light accessory). A200 with A+B buttons.

Upgrading to another SE phone is going to be harder and harder for ALL of us.

if info from cellsignal is correct, W760 will have NA1700 variant
but I personally wish C702 has it
3mpx AF+LED
QVGA screen
except c and a, it has 2100 HSDPA (still has hope it'll have NA1700 variant if T-Mobile decides to carry it)
I wanted to get K850 once, but the bugginess and no NA1700 just turned me off
C702=true W810i successor

I had 3 w810i's, absolute perfect phone, and was a tank. The amount of abuse it took was ridiculous. Killer camera, mp3 player, everything, I only got rid of it for 1 reason, no a2dp I use BT stereo headphones a lot, so I went to the W610i (the k550i wasn't as nice IMO). I believe it still had AF for the 2MP camera, great mp3 player, nice menu system, M2 slot that houses my 8GB card, and noticeably thinner. Works great with my stereo bluetooth as well.

Was looking at getting the W910i, but from the reviews I can't tell if its worth the still $350ish price tag. Any one?

Posted by: Cell_Junkee

I agree with everyone who says to try a k550. For the money it can't be beat. It's as thin as a razr and has a lot to offer.

Posted by: tinleyiltom

+1 vote for w610---k790/k850 also. We'll have to see what the new p5,X1 will bring..It appears they will trump all the others..

Posted by: davistld01

I actually, finally put my hands on a k850i yesterday at my local mobile phone shop...and was not nearly as impressed as I had hoped. I'm sure many own the phone and love it....despite all the horror stores about bugginess...but the hollow/platicky feel, weird keypad keys, and general "feel" disappointed me. Then...

...I then handled a w810i he had also that was BNIB...and, for such a compact little phone it felt solid and dense...with a well thought-out comfortable keypad. It will take some doing for SE to top the w810i as far as bang-for-the-buck IMO.

W610 or maybe K850

Posted by: elvineet

What about the w890i? It's missing the autofocus but everything else about it seems like a good fit.

Sorry for reviving month old thread but I'm in the same dilemma. I got a w810i which I love but now I NEED A2DP support (wireless headphones a big plus when commuting on bike).

For that reason alone, I wanna swap my phone for something equivalent BUT with A2DP support. I'm checking the w910i, w890i and w610i. Is there anything else I should look into? Any handset coming very soon that will have walkman 3.0 and not cost an arm and a leg?

Note that I am NOT a hardcore cellphone user. I use it once per 2 days but use mp3 functionality everyday. However, I don't like buying cheaply built stuff that will most likely break (that's why I refrained from buying w580i).

What would you guys suggest? Any price drops coming for w910 or w890? w910 is a slider, how reliable are sliders? A brick like w810 is so reliable but sliders are stylish.

Any advice is welcome!

w580i is a good walkman phone

Posted by: Cellery

Since you're not a hardcore phone user, I'd recommend the w610i. It's similar to the w810i but upgraded with the newer ui and walkman 2.0 and it's slimmer w/ a2dp.

i have an 8gb m2 with this phone and use it as my mp3 player along with my sony bt headphones every day for my commute to work.

the only downside to this phone for you might be the smaller keys but i got use to them pretty quickly.

good luck in your search.

Yeah the w610i looks nice. Is the build quality comparable to w810i? I wonder for the price difference if I should go with w910i or w890i which both got DB3150 chip (Walkman 3.0, etc.)

Do you know the differences between Walkman 2 and 3? Tough choice... I need to get some decent BT headphones too.

Posted by: Cellery

i never had a w810 so i can't compare. but the w610 has a solid build with no creaks. i've even opened it up a couple of times to clean the dirt under the screen and it's still just as solid as day one.

i don't know the diff between walkman 2 and 3. my gf will be getting the w910 eventually so i can see the diff then.

as for bt stereo headphones, i have the sony dr-bt10cx. i like them cause it's a clip-on, in-ear, and get about 10hr battery life. lasts me for the whole work week commute. 2hrs each day there and back. also, there's volume control but no track control. i take the lack of track control like having a real mp3 player where you have to press a button on the player to change tracks. the phone is small enough so it's not a problem.

If the w810i had a louder earpiece, a higher mp resolution camera, a SW update to speed up the OS and modernize the menus...and a little larger screen...

...it might be the perfect mobile phone.

What would you guys suggest? Any price drops coming for w910 or w890? w910 is a slider, how reliable are sliders? A brick like w810 is so reliable but sliders are stylish.

Any advice is welcome!

This is the same situation I had. I loved my w810i, but bought some wireless headphones and needed a2dp enabled phone. Nothing seemed worth it untill I stumbled onto the w610i. It had every option my 810 did, with added a2dp, it is the perfect substitute hands down IMO. A little thinner, stylish, cheap, 2MP cam with AF + flash (u lose both AF and flash with the w910i, which I also have owned).

Buy a w610 and you will not be sorry, it is the closest equvilant to the w810 on the market, and is really cheap in comparison to what it offers.

I miss the flash light for navigating in the dark

Well I hope you are right. Been waiting for refurb to show up at Sony Style and they happened today K550 version. They wanted 30 bucks more for black, and purple is to gaudy so I took white. They said ship Monday. Then they said shipped today arrive tomorrow. W00t! Coming out of Laredo.

The W810i still is a great phone and I use it in preference to a W580i that was given to me. The freshening I am looking for is in the Java (W580i lets you keep more than one app open and Google faux-GPS works), and in the music player. Not reasonable to try navigating in a 2-hour trance track on W810i. Sure would druther have some 3G and more screen resolution but I think this may hold me for a while. 'Specially since I am not ready to pop big bucks or agree to another 2 years. It will take something as rock solid as W810i to get me to do that and they don't even have such on the horizon for AT&T.

one phone and one phone will only replace your w810i and that is NOKIA N82
nothing else.
i tried. k810, k850, n95, n81, k550i, iphone, viewty. and nothing that made me forget about w810i.
Now i use n82 and its probably the best one so far. think of it as newer, faster, better camera with wifi and gps w810..lol

Wow, that phone DOES look real nice and it's very well rated on gsmarena.com. How is the music player compared to Walkman 3.0? (if you ever tried it) w810i has Walkman 1.0.

The only thing it doesn't have that I'm interested in (not NECESSARY but nice to have) is organizer ease of use. i.e. touchscreen. With that phone, I assume I still wouldn't be using the calendar. :\

It looks great nonetheless but I'll add it to my list! Thanks.

Well it ought to be for 600 smackers. Nice looking fingerprint magnet. I must admit it looks really sweet. But can't Nokia give me real push mail for a more reasonable price? I also have no real usage for a double throwdown 5 megapixel camera and I am still chafing over Nokia garbage such as 2366i and 2610 that I paid good money for. Not fond of the battery draining N75 either.

Back to earth here with nice fresh K550i. They shipped same day and it arrived overnight. Absolutely fantastic service. Too bad I didn't get to town on Saturday. So far I think I like it. Well I don't really like the goofy little keys but perhaps that will grow on me. Seems to have better RF than W810i. I doubt it will match the N3620 RF monster we have but nontheless it seems very respectable.

Why the N82 over the N95? I'm curious. The N82 can't do 3G in North America too. You can get the N95-4 cheaper too because it's offered by Rogers.

400 w/ no US 3g is still a deal breaker -- I agree

Posted by: tszefr

$400 and no 3g? No way. Sure that Nokia looks like it has a fantastic camera but that isn't really something I care much about. The 2 megapixel is just fine for me at this point. Spending way less than half that on the k550i.

Let's see... Good deal from Sony Style. Then probably add one of those Amazon 4gig M2 cards. I thought I would not like white but it is really off-white and has a bit of subdued glitter on the front. As supplied the music player sux, and I have no use for a dedicated internet button whether it bears Jack Splat, Death Star, or a world icon. Thus moving to W610 firmware seemed right. Sure enough, I really like it. The only thing missing after converting it is opening lens cover does nothing. I can deal with that. Oh and the modem didn't work until I found init string after searching for "wvdial" and "K550i" I think.

I've owned the W810i for almost 3 years. Great phone. I still use it as one of my phones. I took a risk and bought the K850i about 6 weeks ago and it has been a wise decision. Reception and clarity is great, music player and video is awesome and surfing with Operamini on ATT's HSDPA network has been tremendous. The Camera is very good. The K850i doesn't look great, but it sure performs well.
