hey guys, i need some advice. my dad got caught for speeding 14mph over on his way back home from Syracuse, NY. now we never been caught for speeding in NY state so this is new to us. it seems we need to fill out this form which states we either plead guilty or not guilty. there's no fine involved so what happens next?

How big is the fine?

With the new system, all the points are transferred over to your Canadian License (if you plea guilty).
As far as I know, your choices are:
- you can plea guilty and pay the fine (buy if there are demerit points, they will be applied to your license)
- you can hire a lawyer to go fight it for you (v.v.expensive) - and they will only reduce the fine, won't cancel it (most likely). Still somefin comes on the record and your insurance goes up
- you can plea NOT guilty, take another trip there and try to explain to them in person in the court

As far as I know, there is thing called "guilty with explaination". If you cant do the last option, I say inquire with NY authorities about "guilty with explaination" option to have the fine reduces to say $100 parking fine? (so it won't come on record).

My personal take is - pay the amount just make sure nothing comes on record because insurance goes up and that stays up for 3-5 years. One time payments you can swallow

same with me. waiting for a court date. I decided to go to court.

17mph over.

if anything I get to delay it for 3 months or so. I'll decide later if I want a ticket fighter or see if I can find my way to the Prosecutor ahead of time.

they are not too kind to out of state drivers (esp Canadians) from what I can tell online. I even tried calling the court office to ask how I should be filling the form out but the clerk was rude and not very helpful at all.

Man your gonna have to come up with a super good excuse if you plead not guilty and remember the judge has heard them all and then some, I think he or she will let you of if it was like a life or death thing that made you speed, after the cop puts his pen on that paper which is the ticket he will be giving you there is no stopping it and your pretty much screwed. The trick is giving the cop a good excuse for speeding and from stopping him or her from writing you one.
good luck.
