Purpose of small 'vent' on front face of v9m?

Hi all,
Does anyone know the purpose of the small 'vent' on the front of a v9m, near the bottom, where the glass meets the metal base? Is it a vent? Or something else?
Mine is covered by a skin I just installed, wondering if that matters.
