iPhone... who was tempted?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

The refurb iPhone offer today from ATT had me really tempted to see what the iPhone fuss is all about. But I need my keyboard on my Treo, ability to use GPS, and exchange. Anyone else also tempted?

Posted by: maevro

Not at all. The iPhone looks great, the UI is nice but the phone just holds no power of persuasion over me.

Personally GPS is worthless to me, I am happy with Google Maps but the lack of UMTS and HSDPA on something that is supposedly so technologically advanced is a joke. There are so many 3rd party applications that I would want to use but could not.

Has any of the firmware updates brought A2DP on board? Listen, the iPhone may be great for millions of people and if they are happy, then great but I just am much happier with either of my current phones.

I'm always tempted as the UI and the screen are just first rate. The sensitivity of the screen to touch compared to all WM devices is not even close to being in the same ball park; it's truly a generation or two ahead of WM device screens.

That said:
I love: 3G, 3.5G, custom software, non-iTunes capability (i.e. Yahoo Music Unlimited minus the DRM), Exchange connectivity, and GPS all too much to be swayed.

The question for me is: will Apple address those shortcomings before WM devices catch up in the screen and UI department? or Vice versa? I have no real vested interest in either camp. I just want the best device to do what I want to do. And right now, and for the foreseeable future, that is WM devices. I see the screens catching up in the next round of devices. I see the UI constantly being improved by the MANY developers who can actually program for WM.

Not an icecube's chance in hell. If I were to try something different, it would be a Nokia N95 or N82.

The iPhone, despite an admittedly fresh take on the user experience, is so 2004's favorite smartphone.

With 3G and certain 3rd party apps, I could be tempted. I can't imagine life without having to do soft resets.

$250 was the right tune for me to be picking up an iPhone. However, I wouldn't want a phone with stifled evolution, especially when I have something like my Tilt.

Posted by: sooby77

I guess I'm more blown away by the browsing experience. Something terribly lacking in WM6! Yup, no 3G, and soft kbd is a killer for me.

I've had a 4G iPhone for a while now. Use it as my couch internet surfing device. Surfing with Safari on the iPhone is hands down the best mobile device surfing experience ever. It still even blows Skyfire out of the water. It's just so damn fluid and seamless and stutterless. Skyfire is good but it's still "clunky". I am tempted to use my iPhone as my one and only device but the business like feel and all the applications and buttons/dpad on my Kaiser keep it at the top of the list as my "desert island" phone.

I grabbed one. Still need my tilt during the week for Exchange Push but for 250, i'll play with it for a while. you never know, when 2.0 comes out and it has push, it may be a nice(er) device.

I'll have to admit, I've been at least tempted. But when I stumble across things like this I quickly realize that I would probably be annoyed by something almost instantly and I really appreciate what I have.

Yeah, that article has all sorts of "reasons" that you wouldn't want an iphone, but when i read through them, #'s 1, 6, 12, 29 and 51 were the only ones i care about. #22 was intriguing but if i had 16 gb's built in i wouldn't really care to swap memory cards honestly. And #31 about java apps is all well and good but the ONLY two java programs i use are opera mini and gmail app (only sometimes) which i wouldn't need if i had an iphone. To make a long story short, i think that list is stupid and reaching...IMO!

BUT i still won't buy an iphone lol. Those 5 reasons (from the 42) are big ones! I need 3G and a true "free" community of software like XDA. If i see users actually posting a large host of free software and they release a 3g version i will have to buy it i think.

IPhone? NEVER! Waiting on ANDROID!

I had one for about 4-5 months. It was unlocked on Tmobile. I got tired off all the unlocking, jailbreaking and moved back to windows mobile.

A lack of Exchange support (although now available), support for editing documents etc..,basic phone functions, and lack of software was really why I moved back.

It is a phone I could operate with one hand which was very nice. The UI is far a head of windows mobile. The Point UI or HTC Touch is good but way behind Apple. Hopefully windows mobile 7 will be close to what Apple has.

In my opinion, the iPhone is great for multimedia types. If you like listening to music, watching videos or web browsing (safari is way better then pie and better then opera 9.5) the iPhone is will fill your needs exceptionally well.

I have a 614c which I can operate with 1 hand, it has GPS, 3G, 3mp camera and a ton of apps I can install without having to have Apple's approval.

I also prefer to have a keypad (or qwerty). Call me old school but It is easier to text, dial with a keypad rather then onscreen. One reason I sent back my HTC Touch.

What I find amusing about the iPhone and it's fanboys is that these fanboys cry about Windows and Microsoft being big brother and not being open. Take a look at the iPhone and look at the restrictiveness of it. It is locked to one carrier (thankfully there is the dev team to get around this), all applications need to be apple approved (another shout out to the dev team to get around this one) and then new app store still restricts what an be run and how many apps can be run at the same time.

Huh? Whoever said that?

EDIT: Looks like Flash is coming to the iPhone.

Yeah, I agree many of them are a stretch. But 5 to 10 of them stick out to me and totally kill it as an option.

personally, I've understood the fuss about the iphone but personally never been tempted. Reason being, there is certain software that I use for work, etc... that will only run on WM.

I have used in the past six months:

- iPhone 8gb
- T-Mobile Dash
- Motorola Q9h
- HTC 6800 (Sprint Mogul)

Of all of them, the best and most well thought out interface was the iPhone. I really felt that I could do almost everything that I did on my laptop from the iPhone, and it was just as intuitive. Mail and web browsing were the best I have ever seen on a phone, and having iTunes integration was icing on the cake.

That said, there are many things the iPhone lacks that keep me in the WM space:

- IM support. There are two hobbled IM clients available for the iPhone, but nothing to the level of Agile Messenger or IM+.

- VoIP support. I use Skype a lot for work and IM, and not having a Skype client is a severe handicap.

And with that comes...

- 3G. EDGE (EGSM) is great for mail and occasional web browsing, but to make the iPhone a real stellar device, it needs 3G.

And with that comes...

- Tethering. I tether. A lot. It is my main method of accessing the internet for personal use 12 hours in the day (mail, web & IM).

- GPS. Not that I use it that often, but having GPS and a Nav package has saved my bacon a few times commuting (although it also send me into no mans land during a snowstorm once).

and finally:

- Bluetooth A2DP. What were they thinking? The iPhone should have had A2DP at launch, period.

I traded my iPhone to a friend who wanted one, and I may get one of the refurbs just to have one (especially for those long trips on Metro North I will have at the end of April / beginning of May). But I think Apple needs to raise the bar a bit higher.

Jim

PS And for some reason, I'm not overly fond of the Q9H either. I actually like my T-Mobile Dash better (and am looking for an S630 to replace it).

I'm tempted to get one for the wife.

No 3G, MS Exchange, 3rd party apps, and the ability to use as storage/filesystem is the reason I didn't purchase. But that's all going to change soon. Until then it's my WM6 phones all the way.

Posted by: JwY

I'm game if they make one that can do everything I need.
The proprietary connections, iTunes, etc are going to be annoying though.

A little, but lack of hardware QWERTY keyboard and terrible rate plans from AT&T/T-Mobile murdered any thoughts of that. Also EDGE is meh.

Well I don't think T-Mobile's plans are all that bad. For $8 you get unlimited EDGE, or $20 for unlimited EDGE and Hotspot access. You do have to jump through hoops to get the iPhone unlocked, but once you do it everything else is easy.

Jim

Posted by: canadian studen

Not really hoops, one click of a button, and 4 minutes later you have an unlocked iPhone.

I had one and got bored with it due to slow app development but now I am considering It again.

Did you have to "activate" the iphone or just pop in your SIM?

Posted by: Wrangler3383

I'm going to put this thread in the lounge if it's ok with everyone.

From what I've heard T-Mobile's "unlimited" is far from unlimited. (maybe that was Verizon) but once you hit a certain amount of data they cut off your service, which would be a huge problem for me considering how much I tether.

This thread should have been moved to iPhone section, not WM lounge IMHO.
Why is it still in WinMo-related subforum? What, moderators don't want to angry the Mac-loving iJobs-worshipping iPhone owners?

Posted by: marktang

i've used 2 iphones before but still went back to WM phones. there's just so much you can do with WM than the iPhone but i have to admit safari is the best web browser ive seen on a phone.
