Best Configuration for Skype on GSM Touch? Good Enough?

I was playing around with a new WiFi router and decided to give Skype for Windows Mobile a try on my Touch Enhanced using the WiFi connection. I downloaded and installed the latest Skype WM version 2.2.0.37. What a disappointment! Calls to the Echo / Sound Test Service were unintelligible, though surprisingly, playback of some old voice mail was very clear, on a par with my Linksys Skype CIT-200 handset.

On advice from various Internet websites, I tried some older Skype WM distributions, 2.2.0.18 and 2.2.0.20 which use a different audio codec. Though the sound quality was much improved over 2.2.037, the audio is still plagued with dropouts and garbled speech; not at a level I'd consider acceptable for day to day use.

My question: has anyone determined an acceptable setup that allows Skype to be used on a Touch over WiFi? Perhaps this is just not possible...
