I will probably be switching from Verizon to AT&T with my wife to get a family plan. I will be purchasing a iphone this weekend through a local Apple store. What is the procedure to set up a family plan ?
She will be getting a Blackjack II through AT&T. Do we set up a family plan at that time and then go home and activate my iphone for the plan ? Or do I set up the entire plan at the AT&T store first ? I'd like to set this all up in one day if possible. What is the proper procedure ??

You can either do everything over the internet or go to the store and do it.
I bought my iPhone at the AT&T store and activated it through iTunes at home. Then went on the internet and got a second line and cell for free since they have a sale going on right now.

I just did this last week and the "easy" way is to go to the AT&T store and buy all your phones and get your plan set up. Take your iPhone home, sync it with iTunes and when prompted, select "existing customer" (My old number ported in minutes, even with the ETF).
It was very simple, even with me being a noob at all this stuff. Once you add the iPhone on your existing plan it will be 26.00 for activation and then 29.99 per month for the extra line and unlimited data.
Also, my local AT&T store matched any ad I printed out from the online AT&T store. I got my two regular phones for free, and to help me out cuz I paid an ETF on one of my old lines, I am getting credit for all 3 of my activations (88 dollars).

so you had to pay for another activatoin fee for your iphone and you didnt have to go through another credit check for the iphone right

I know they say there is an activation fee when adding the iPhone. I added 2 iPhones & neither line had an activation fee on them. I might have just got lucky.
To the OP. You could go to amazon.com & get your wife signed up. You can get the Blackjack 2 for 0.01 compared to AT&T 199.99 with a 100.00 mail in rebate.
If you sale on ebay you could get you 1 as well & sell it to cover some of the iPhone cost.
AT&T will require a Data plan for the blackjack @ 30.00 a month, & iPhone data @ 20.00 a month.
If you don't want to order over the internet I recommend going to a AT&T authorized agent. They sell the phones so much cheaper. My local agent sells the tilt for 150.00 less than AT&T. Just an option.

That's an interesting idea. Thanks for the insight on Amazon. I like the idea of going to the AT&T store and setting up the plan before I activate the iphone. It doesn't seem that difficult ...

sicktoss: No, I did not have to do another credit check. All that was done at the AT&T store. Since I already had an acct and was considered an "existing customer" (even though it was only by an hour-ha ha), I just followed the iTunes prompt. And yes, I did personally have to pay the 26 activation fee. (if it's a first line, it's 36 dollars).
