Quick question.

I am currently an AT&T customer with no data plan. Would this approach work without activating through itunes, renewing contract for another 2 years, etc

1) Add media net plan to my current plan then Jailbreak iphone bypassing activation through itunes so i don't need to renew my contract for another 2 years. Will this work? Will the only thing not functioning be visual voicemail?

Please list any other options.

Great I just purchased one through Apple and I'm not under contract. I was wondering if that would work. But doesn't At&t know what phone your using because of the serial number?

they kno what serial number....but it doesnt matter..you can still just add the unl media net and work just fine...!!!!!!

It's the IMEI number ... and yes. At any point in time, AT&T will know what phone you are using on their network.

Are there any other advantages of hacking the phone besides be able to use it on a different carrier and avoiding a 2 year contract?

I just picked up a refurb from the store and I don't mind extending the contract, and I already have a media max plan for my razr2, which is the alternative to the 200 text iphone plan.

that and you can do some other types of customizing with it......only other thing is you would have visual voicemail....there are some att users that activated it...and then still jailbroke it but its personal preference

Basically, you get no monthly service discount if you have an existing one already. That's the downside for me, I didn't want to lose my 25% discount, but I would like to see how visual voicemail works (you don't have that option when you unlock it).

i was one of the ones that activated the legit way but still jailbroke to add custom content, etc...it's not jailbroken anymore...but either way - visual voicemail isn't anything spectacular. honestly - it kind of annoys me sometimes because until you listen to the voicemail that stupid little 1 on the phone icon doesn't go away. i'm sure you can turn it off, but i'm lazy...then again, i guess it's no difference than a regular phone having a little envelope until you check your messages. for some reason though - that never bothered me. but that big red and white 1 bothers me sometimes, haha

I jailbroke and activated mine with ZiPhone, but calling and message sending fails. I've already tried resetting it. I guess I must be missing something?

Just go over the tutorials in the hacking and unlocking subforum VERY carefully. Sometimes, just missing one little thing could cause that. I used iNdependence when I did mine so I can't be much help with ZiPhone as I'm not at all familiar with it. I'm sure someone else will be of more help. Sorry

I also didnt want to loose my discount and signed up for two years so I purchased a refurb from ATT for 249. Did all with Ziphone 2.6b (firmware 1.1.3) Unlocked ,Activate and Jailbroke. Every thing seems to work fine but You tube wont connect, tried all the fixes still in the installer no dice. Any body out there have any ideas. How to get this to work for 1.1.3 i guess its not a big deal. Also Im using this on a blackberry plan.
