Possible problem with ALL iPhones - Please read!

Hey guys

I currently have a 16 gig iPhone, and used to have an 8 gig.

My old 8 gig used to have problems with reception during sleep once in awhile. It would simply not take any calls once in awhile, without warning. It would work MOST of the time.

I've since sold that one and I now have a 16 gig with 1.1.4, unlocked with Ziphone. Again, the same reception problem still happens! And I'm pretty convinced it's not a hardware issue, since I've read about this problem all over on different sites.

Anyway, I'm trying to determine what causes it. I can say with some certainty that, at least on 1.1.4, this problem only occurs when the battery is at 20% or less (after a warning has popped up). I'm sure many people don't actually let their phone drain to 20%, so I would figure that many people would never actually experience this problem.

I will now describe the symptoms I've seen in good detail:

The iPhone (at 20% or less battery, after the warning) is asleep. When you try to wake it from sleep, reception goes to 0 bars and you see No reception for 10 seconds or so, and then it goes back to full reception with your carrier. Also your friends may complain ("Why the hell is your phone off!", etc). Also sometimes, when you try to wake it, the screen goes black for a second then comes back, and the above reception problems occur.

Please, everybody should try to see if they can get these problems to show up (with UNLOCKED PHONES ONLY!). I believe it didn't occur before 1.1.1, and I think 1.1.4 narrowed the problem down to occuring only after the battery is 20% or less. However, I'm not sure about these statements.

So please post if you've noticed any of these problems, and if you have not yet, try to drain your phone down to low amounts and see if they show up.

My phone runs down to 20% remaining on a semi regular basis and have I never experienced this issue. I had a 4 gig, an 8 gig, and now a 16 gig. None of these phones have had an issue like the one you are discribing. My wife doesn't charge her iPhone until it hits the 10% warning, and she still gets calls as well.

Personally, it sounds to me like it may be a coverage issue.

Oh, and I am unlocked to 1.1.4 on my phone and my wifes. About 10 or 11 of my employees have iPhones as well (about 60% unlocked and on T-Mobile), and a quick ask around to them yielded no similar experiences to yours.

Sorry.

Actually, I should have added this too. Can you also mention your unlock method and any 3d party software you use often? And do you shut your phone off occasionally/periodically?

I had the same problem. I upgraded to 1.1.4 and have only had the problem once or twice since then. I'm pretty sure its one of the third party apps I use. I haven't sat down to figuare out which program is causing the problem though.

wow,so you have bad reception with TWO phones and you say there's a problem with ALL phones...since it's a reception issue, are you positive that it's NOT just the lack of good service in your area?where i live i never get less than 5 bars but i go home to visit the folks and i'm lucky if i get 2,usually just no service at all...might just be the area you're in...i mean, there's MILLIONS of iphones in countries around the WORLD and you're saying they ALL have problems because of your TWO..?

While my phone is not unlocked. I can say with a fair amount of certainty that I don't believe it's a coverage issue. I had this issue in NC, SC and GA. My phone had this problem out of the box (1.1.2) it stayed with me through 1.1.3 and only 1.1.4 fixed it. The problem I had was the exact same as the op is describing, only it happened regardless of the amount of charge. When I was jailbroken, I had to edit my power management file to keep it from happening as john tool never worked for me.

No no, the nature of the problem proves its not a coverage issue. Maybe it was a stretch saying it happens to ALL iPhones, but it certainly happens to many.

In my house I always have 5 bars. Even my old crappy sony ericsson T610 which didn't have 850mhz had 5 bars. The iPhone, of course, also has 5 bars, but the issue would happen once in awhile and make it lose complete reception, being unable to receive phone calls. I should probably edit my first post, since 1.1.4 has mostly fixed the issue for me, it's only occurred once since I updated. But that's still once too many in my opinion, I missed a phone call when it happened (my friend ended up calling my house right after). Also, if you do a quick google search, you'll find a 46 page discussion board on this topic, so this problem is definitely not all that rare.

Have two iPhone here unlocked using iunlock method originally and now 1.1.4 using ziphone method. Never had a problem with signal even with battery as low as 10%.

I have unlocked my iPhone with Ziphone. 1.1.4

Calls, Internet on wifi and other functions works normally. But once a while when I press HOME button to wake iPhone, I only see apple logo and during that time if I try to call myself from another phone it doesn’t work and go to my voicemail.

I am with AT&T without EDGE only using wifi.

Is this a similar problem or diffrent.

This has to do with iPhones new and revamped power management and not the unlocking method or what have you.
It tries to preserve the last 20% of power for emergency calls. You will also notice that in this state, EDGE will disappear as well unless you do something to "wake it" (eg. check mail, browse, etc).

I personally welcome this change as I really don't want it to check my mail or weather when I have a almost dead battery.

If you wish to bypass this, just install one of the "keep-alive" apps from installer (not sure what the name is of the latest, the one people use to keep firefly up and connected but it shouldn't be hard to find).

It will bypass and tweak iPhones power management at the price of a shorter battery life.

This is similar but I never saw an apple logo. Although my calls were redirected. I have yet to see it happen again since the first time though, which is good news for me.

Phreakish, where did you hear about this? I never read about that anywhere.

I believe it was part of the release of 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 (the detailed list of changes).
Should be able to find it on Apple.com.
I'll see if I can find it.

There was also a discussion about it either here or at MMi which also talked about the app/tool to turn off the power save mode.
