My first rant : charger ports

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

ill start out classy ...wtf. (hows that for an entrance) why all of sudden are all the phones being released, moving the charger port to side of the phone instead of the bottom. this make it very hard to hold it and talk while its charging. also this makes it harder to make a docking station for said phone. i miss the phones with contacts on the battery that you just lay in a cradle. what happen to that.

</rant>

Blame it on the RAZR as after that phone came out with the mini USB port on the side of the phone, everybody else started following suit when they made their slim phones.

Most all Samsungs now have their charging ports on the side of the phone and even have covers for them and the memory card slot (if they have one).

I know Nokia phones still tend to keep their charging port on the bottom as they have been.

The thing I hate are the proprietary ports that some of these companies use. Samsung has like 3 different ones for their current phones. I have three different chargers for my Samsungs: one for my C417 D600 P207, one for my D807 t809 Blackjack 1 and another one now for the Blackjack 2.

I agree with Mango. SE has their own charging port also, and it is pretty bad. I just wish that they would all go mini USB like Motorola, and be done with it already. Add regular headphone jack, and make them all use the same type of memory card, man, that would be sweet. I would settle for just one of the three I mentioned, doesn't matter which one.

With some SE phones they say the reason they moved the FastPort to the side was so that when the headphones are plugged in and the phone is in your pocket, the phone doesn't turn upside down.

BUT I agree wholeheartedly

Really? I always thought those were better... Much more hackable

Personally, I could care less about the hackability factor. Convenience, performance and durability rank much higher on my list of priorities.

Case in point: The ultra-skinny new Motorola Razr2 V8 & V9. Instead of using the tried and true "normal" mini-USB that worked great on the original (and not much thicker) V3...Moto bowed their design knee to the "new technology" of the micro-USB. Results? The micro-USB male plug is a total PITA to insert into the female port...and because they figured that the port should be covered to maintain the sleek, sexy lines of the phone...they cover it with a tiny rubber plug that is held in place by a even more tiny rubber "hinge"...and all that lasts only a short time until it tears loose and either flops around off the side of the phone...or is ripped off by the angry user, leaving an unsightly divot in the side of the phone.

New is not necessarilly good.

that and the USB is hard to get plugged in, in the dark... always need a light to get it in...

/waits for can't find 'it' jokes

lol

I waited for the same jokes after my post. Good crowd here...so far.

I love mini USB.

Worst charging port i've ever seen was the Palm one. ****ing joke lol

used to have nextels and a v710 with the p2k port, didn't really mind those.

Posted by: bigkahunafish

nothing was worse than the old motorolas ( like on my v710... ) sometimes I would fiddle for 10 minutes trying to get it to charge...

Posted by: Bfat567

interesting responses. i dont like the little cover they put over them these days either. also the 3 prong motorola's were awful but the v710 was such an awesome phone. still have mine.

Motorola wins hands down. I have never had a moto phone that had a decent charger connector. Nokia and it's din connector was far superior as far as I'm concerned. I don't think moto has ever had a clue. . .moto charge connectors. . .guaranteed to break or wear out quickly. JMHO

Posted by: poirier.simon

My brand new Motorola K1m came with a broken mini USB port to came back from repair with another broken mini USB port ... So i'm in the band of HATE MINI USB PORT !!!

Posted by: davistld01

You know...IF it has to be the mini-USB port, the best I have ever seen was on the original Motorola Razr...and currently, on the BlackBerry Curve. The port is open on the side...and easy to get to, even in the dark.

I think the Mini USB ports on my HTC 8125, Motorola v3xx, and Nokia e62 are the ****ing best

Posted by: gruss01

I heard it was because people like to drop their phones int he cup holder in there car, have something spilled in there and BAM water damage. tend to believe it too since I've had quite a few "car kit" errors with LG's and nice green connectors on the bottom. with the ports on the side thats less of a factor and I love the mini usb charge port, razr runs dry find a pc and plug it in, almost everyone has a pc and a mini usb cable laying around

completely agree. the din charger is still one of my favorite. i dont quite mind the mini usb though, the micro on the other hand is a different story.

maybe you should just hate the Moto K1m or the factory that manufactures them. the mini USB connector has nothing to do with the fact that the phone sucked.

What phone do you like the best?

e62 has the nicest operating system and form factor, and doesnt piss me off. The 8125 hasn't been the most solid, but I just flashed a base rom and upgraded to 6.1 TNT ROM, so far it has been solid and I am liking it again....other than that the 8125 really is an awesome device (- crap wifi reception). The E62 is a hell of a bargain, awesome keyboard and OS, i will often switch to this when i need a break from WM and want something nicer to use, i love my e62.

V3xx, hell of a performer and highly functional, its OS kinda bores me though.

Just got a 2125 to play with, liking it so far, can' wait to flash it to WM6(.1). It does have the poorest call quality out of the bunch though (on AMR-HR), the v3xx you can at least disable AMR-HR since it performs poorly with it too.

i have never had any problems with any of my mini usb chargers, and i've had a lot of phones that take them including my two phones now in the pearl and the htc s620.

but the thing i do hate about most phones that take mini usbs, is that if you want to charge it and listen to music on your headphones, you cant because both plugins go to the mini usb. i know blackberry has a separate plugin but most htc and motorola models do not.

Then you would love it in Japan. All phones use the same charger and they all use MiniSD for memory stick(including SE). Not sure about headphones though.

If I had to pick the best charger ports...the award would be a toss up between the MiniUSB port of the BlackBerry (83xx & 88xx models) and the original Moto Razr V3. They are both open, and easy to get to...and not tying to be too flashy.

Posted by: Mizah

ive never had problems with mini USB adapters. They're great!

Posted by: WaltA

Too bad that as of May 23, 2007, the USB-IF will no longer certify new products using the mini-USB connector. Instead, they must use the new micro-USB connector.

Posted by: iseeanonymous

As many problems as I've had with mini-usb connectors I love only having to have one charger in my car to hook up my phone, bluetooth, and gps. Nothing beats the old nokias though. Well designed and the charger I used for my first Nokia in 1999 worked on the last one I got in 2005.

Posted by: zephxiii

I hate how they are ditching mini-usb like that, i have so many devices that use it, ****ing pisses me off.

i guess that how they make money off us.
At first I thought the curve charging port was on the wrong spot, but later on realize that it's better than I thought, You can text and also still talk on the phone.

Posted by: reeneebob

I wish the BB charging ports were covered.

I am paranoid about that sort of thing...I don't mind it on the side, just cover the damn thing! I also wish the Curve had side access micro SD ports like the Pearl did. What a pain in the *** to get to the SD card...

Stupidest move ever. They saved a whole mm. Supposedly the new connector is made for more insertion cycles, but I have yet to have a mini-USB fail on me. I love mini-USB right now. Multiple phones, Bluetooth headset, etc all using the same charger. I can share one cable between the phones, cameras, memory card readers, etc. I'm going to end up with a tiny mini-USB to micro-USB adapter. Boo. Couldn't they have just made the mini-USB tougher?
