6300: Frequency cannot be affected by firmware updates

I myself recently updated my Nokia 6300b using NSU and discovered my model went from RM-222 (NA) to RM-217 (Europe). I was concerned the operating frequency had been affected, so I did a little searching on these forums. Seems like a great deal of people suspected the frequency was altered, specifically the 850MHz band being "blocked" or "crippled." Some even provided anecdotal evidence.

I called Nokia and was told there is no way to alter frequency via firmware and that it is purely hardware.

Case closed?

^ It's the hardware that makes the 6300b GSM850. However, in the non-b variant firmware, there's a band selector toggle that maybe different from the b variant firmware. So someone may think it needs to use Phoenix to select it manually back to GSM850/1800/1900 from GSM900/1800/1900.
