Is there an application or anything that will let me view the number of voice mails that I have read or are new, my old Nextel phones did this, I know there has to be a way.
Thanks

Voicemails that you've read? Did you mean text messages that you've read or voicemails that you've received?

On the nextels, the msg screen would display liek this:
Voicemails - 3/5
etc
3 being "new" and there being 5 total messages. It would do it for voicemails, txtmsg, etc.
This owuld be a nice feature to add on the centro though. Any thoughts?

I wasn't sure if that's what the OP meant and I didn't want to go off answering a question that he/she wasn't asking, ya know?
I use TakePhone by Shimon and it offers everything except that. Now, it will have a phone icon blinking for every call missed and then a phone blinking that shows that you have a voicemail message...but alas, not how many. Shimon is a wonderful developer and this has been asked of him recently so it's likely only a matter of time before such is implemented in TakePhone.
I don't, however, know of an app at present time that has this feature. I'll gladly keep this thread posted on the development of TakePhone though.
Edit: Just to add, my Alltel Moto Razr (and every other dumbphone I've ever owned) offered this feature as well. I'm pretty sure all "dumb"phones (ie. non-smarphones) do.

Actually, Shimon has another app, '2Day ' that displays how many VoiceMails you have, as well as SMS, emails, missed calls, etc. It's a GREAT app!

2Day software looks great, but still doesn't tell how many voicemails you currently have. From the 2Day software readme file.

(*) voicemail monitoring is on Treo devices only,
and dependent on carrier.

Evidently good Sprint doesn't have this technology. A friend (Huge Sprint Supporter) told me, that you would only get the little envelope, and that's it. Maybe that's why they bought Nextel,.... to get that amazing technology of displaying read/Unread voicemails on the handsets. One thing Sprint does have is the ability to tell you what state someone is calling you from. But if there are anymore suggestions, please let me know. Its a small feature, but it comes in real handy.

Guess what?! I was just sitting here and my phone rang...well I decided to ignore it as I was watching Rachel Ray.
And when the alert popped up it saie you have 2 voicemails.
Why had I never noticed this? So Takephone DOES offer this, it's just not in the line the app screen that allows it to be up all the time, the way it is with emails and text messages. So as long as I don't clear the alert automatically I in fact will have the number of voicemail messages...though 2Day may be more along the lines of what you want...but since it stunned me just now, I figured I'd share.

Ya know I think it's the built in phone app feature and not Takephone. The little bell alert in the top corner will stay up after that "alert box goes away" if you tap "done" and not "clear all." It lists exactly how many vmails you have and if you've missed a call you have a number listed for every caller. Both the alert box and this box (which can be pulled forward by tapping the bell) will tell you exactly how many you have.
It's funny how we overloook the builtin functions sometimes...I know I've done it several times.

Yep, OHD is correct.
And I'm only partially correct in that 2day will display that you have a voicemail, but it doesn't show 'how many' voicemails you have.
2day Menu - no alerts

2day Menu - 3 alerts
(You can see the icons on top that show this, or tap the "Menu" to see them.)
This screenshot shows that I have 3 alerts which is: a missed call, a voicemail, and an SMS.
