Pantech duo: "New" ROM available

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

FYI, Pantech has released a "new" ROM for the Pantech duo. It is available at their website, in the Support area. The Windows Mobile build appears to be the same as the shipping ROM, but the radio version is incremented. I haven't seen any visible changes so far.

I read elsewhere that it updates the radio to support the faster HSDPA connection (3mbps vs 1 or something like that)

Absolutely not true. I am running Windows Vista and had no problem at all updating my Duo from the Pantech site. You have to be patient - it even warns you not to interfere and that it appears to be stalled while loading, but it isn't. You have to let it go till you get the message to restart your computer. It will then install the 3rd part of the download.

Posted by: dukestr

During the re-flashing process (step 3), i got a "run time error" message. Now, my duo is stuck in the screen "modem downloading"...its been at this state for 5 minutes. Is it screwed?

Posted by: monster28

ok well let me say i let it down load all the way and it still bricked my phone and a panchtech tech said that vista will not let the upday down load right

Posted by: dracorna

ok, so did anyone at pantech say how to unbrick it? Its kinda ridiculous if any of us who do not have access to xp or 2k want to update our phones we are SOL and risk our phones going kaput.

Posted by: Tampa8

Maybe some of this will help.
First, as I posted I had no problem downloading and installing using Vista. I have "User Account Control" turned off when downloading, if there is any problem downloading using vista that will often be it.

Second, and I can't stress this enough, be patient it took a long time for each stage. I see people saying they waited five minutes, that's not at all long enough.

Third, there are three stages. After the first two, the phone resets, be sure it is still connected to the computer, because after that reset it downloads the third stage.

Posted by: dracorna

ok, It goes through what I guess would be the first stage (install modem) and then gives me a popup saying its done. When I click ok it tells me how to set up the UI stuff on the phone and clicking next tells me to close the reflasher.

do you have a copy of the reflasher you are using (the one I am useing I got on the pantech site last night)

Posted by: Tampa8

I followed the instructions, so I turned off my sync program, and turned off the phone. Then turned on the phone using the method given to put it in download mode.

When I started the update, there was a progress bar, it actually showed there were three stages. After the first two stages were downloaded to the phone (and it took a long time) the program as I remember said it was done, and I said "uh oh" what about the third stage, but I followed the instructions (can't remember - clicking next or whatever it said) and it reset the phone, then downloaded the third stage.

this is what I see:

Reflashing Start - Step 3.

this program...

Warning:...

Warning:...

Status:

Bar 1

Bar 2

[ ]Emergency Mode

I click start

it does the platform eboot and then searches USB device
after several seconds of searhing it can not connect with DUO. I try again this time is managed to get through Updating Modem (2nd bar) and pops up with "Re-flashing Complete"

I click OK

It tells me Im on Step 4 and that while the phone was being updated the Modem link was inactive. It then tells me that I can disconnect and let if finish booting. I do so and the phone remains on Download Ready.

Am I missing anything?

Ok after talking to a few Pantech reps:

Connect the phone a start the reflash in normal mode.

When it gets stuck on Searchiong for device: Disconnect the Duo and remove the battery to turn off, power back on and reconnect, magically it will start the re-flash and work properly.

Glad you got it figured out. Sounds like sometimes the program doesn't restart the phone. This thread should help alot of people.

Posted by: dracorna

Me too. Not sure if this will work on vista (I used one of the many orther comps I have access too and it was XP) but I believe that it would as it was getting stuck in the same way as on Vista and it cleared it up.

I have a co-worker who has the same phone and recently encountered this same issue. I used your advise and his phone now works. Thanks.

Posted by: tpadela

after a few trys, the method worked. thanks dracona!

Posted by: dracorna

Don't thank me. Thank the Pantech Rep who actually had brains enough to leave the script behind and think on the fly.

Good fix, i flashed mine in Vista and had no issues at all. As someone else noted i do have the UAC turned off.

Posted by: mkreafle

I was wondering how long you meant when you say that it takes a LONG time. I have let my phone sit on "- Modem Downloading -" for about a hour... Restart the process. Same thing. :/

Posted by: mkreafle

Well, I just figured it out. Looks like the modem driver didn't install properly. Updated the driver by hand. Looks like it's happy now.

Posted by: slyce

I was in the same situation as others but I'm running WinXP.

Drivers installed ok and yet it kept saying "could not connet to DUO"
(yes it was mispelled in the dialog).

I tried the disconnect USB & remove battery when it said "searching for device" and voila it actually started updating the ROM.
(Called Pantech but no tech's were available so HowardForums & Google to the rescue). Thanks everyone!

Side note (from a Pantech tech) to reset the software features of the phone (my PocketIE was messed up in that when I went to full screen I could never get out of it and the soft menu keys were both gone):

Turn phone off
Remove Battery
(& sim card since it will wipe it clean!!! This would have been good to know )
Take out SIM by sliding it up
Replace Battery
Turn phone on

click ok
<Enter the following...>*CLEAR# <hit send> i.e. *25327#

phone should restart
Turn phone off

Remove Battery
Put SIM back in by sliding it down
Replace Battery
Turn phone on

i was wondering how long it took everyone elses update to get past the "Updating Modem" part of the reflash......the earlier parts of the reflash went by pretty fast but its been on Updating Modem for a half hour

Posted by: slyce

I cannot recall the exact number of minutes it took. I was just happy I had a phone again and not a paperweight.

Perhaps others in this thread could provide a better time estimate.

Posted by: mkreafle

Like my issue, if you don't see a progress bar it isn't doing anything. Go into device manager and make sure the driver doesn't have an issue.

Posted by: techeros

you are the MAN!!!

I have XP pro, followed all instructions, but stuck on modem thing
I checked Device Mgr and sure enough yellow !
Rclick on the yellow ! and told M$ to search on internet
IT FOUND DRIVER!! -
My alternative to that was to point to the c:\pantech folder durring install of flash driver

well if finished
Thanks buddy!!

What is the third stage supposed to look like?
After it said it was finished and I could disconnect the phone, I left it connected.
I clicked ok after the phone finished starting up but nothing downloaded. All it did was the initial setup like when I first got the phone. I finished the setup with the phone still connected to the PC and still nothing else downloaded to the phone. Was there something I missed?
Phone seems to work fine, but I would like to know if I missed something important that could mess things up in the future.
