Is my centro defective or am I just dumb?

I've had other Treos in the past, just got an att Centro a week ago for a friend who lives out of state. Before shipping it off, I set up the centro with a few apps, memory card full of Family Guy.

Went to make a test call and the phone said "Phone off, power on?" Hit yes. Watched the Palm screen come up with the Hello! in the bottom. Go to make a phone call, phone says "Phone off, power on?" over and over. Popped out the battery and it fixed itself, made a call, no problem.

So phone gets to my friend and he says he can't make a call, and it's obviously doing the same thing to him. I told him to pop out the battery, he's tried that and everything else and it's not turning the phone radio on and he can't make or receive calls.

Going to a store tomorrow, but is there an easy fix here we are overlooking or is this phone just broke?

Yes, here is the fix:

Hard reboot! Take out battery, Hold down the power button, reinsert battery, then let go off power button when 2nd Palm Logo appears. It will erase all your data on the phone (not card).. This will fix the issue. I called Sprint and they had no idea how to fix it. I had to figure it out myself.

Hard reboot (not soft reboot)
