Using Tilt with MEdia Net plans

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have currently an n75 with medianet unlimited (20 bucks a month with 1500sms). recently i was given a brand new tilt from a friend as a present.

Q1. Do i have to notify AT&T wireless that i will use the tilt?
Q2. Do i have to upgrade my dataplan to a PDA?
Q3. If i dont upgrade to PDA data plan will i be charged extra for mb used?
Q4. Anything else i need to think about?

I am not planning on tethering but will use between 10mb-100mb of data a month...

TIA

Here are my comments...

1) Nope, you do not. They'll already know when you turn the phone on after changing out the SIM.
2) Do you have to? No. Does AT&T want you to? Yes. With that said, you'll be running the wrong data plan and who knows, they could charge you. However, they've never done that.
3) See #2
4) I would think about accessories. Do you need a case? Screen protector? Are you going to be using the phone a LOT? Maybe you need an extra battery. Seidio sells a bigger capacity battery that's the same size as the OEM battery.

Currently, and I stress *currently* AT&T enforces your data plan based on what phone you TELL them you have (rather last told them you have.) So if you call and say you have a Tilt, they'll treat you like you have a tillt and may eventually block medianet (it's somewhat rare, but it has happened.)

If you don't notify them, they'll assume and treat you as if you still have the N75 and likely never bother you.

Of course when you power up the Tilt it tells AT&T what you have, but they don't use this information for enforcement. Not yet at least.
But they do it for the iPhone now, so it may just be a matter of time.

You won't be charged for data no matter what. Worst case scenario they'll block the data and 'force' you to get the right data plan.

However for the time being it will work.
So I say "ditto" to post #2

The amount of data you use doesn't matter. Unless you use several gigabytes, you won't raise a flag.

I know this has been asked before, but there were no definitive answers.

My main phone is an N95-4. I have the Media Max 200. both my N82 and N95 work fine, havent got any strange charges. I just got a Tilt today, unlocked it, and flash it to HTC rom, and i began using it. Internet works great.

But, am i going to get charged some crazyness because this is technically a smart/pda phone to them? i logged onto my account, and the little picture of my device is now a tilt, instead of unknown.

anyone else do this without repercussions? i dont really do much data, under a gig a month easy.

A gigabyte of data just using a phone as a phone is a lot of data use. You use the wrong data plan at your own risk. The other phones you mentioned are all conventional phones.

That doesnt make any sense. The N95 to at&t is a conventional phone, because they dont know what the hell it is, because they dont sell it. i can pull the same amount of data with both the n95 and tilt, both 3g.

does anyone actually successfully use the tilt on this plan?

It will work with the MEdia Max but you run the risk of AT&T cancelling the data plan and not cancelling data access if a PDA is your phone of record and you do not have a PDA data plan.

hmmm. If i get 'caught' (this is so ridiculous), will they automatically add the "proper" plan? which is what, the $35 pda plan?

thanks man, i really appreciate the info.

I have been using the BJ and the BJ II on the medianet unlimited since I got both and never had any problems with access. I hardly use the Net part but to just send MMS once in awhile or check showtimes. So my access is low. My friend who works at a AT&T store noticed my plan one day and told me that really use the hell out of it ( push mail, gps, slingbox and such ) they will not even notice. Since my use is so low they never seemed to care what I was using.

They could technically change the plan to the PDA Plan, which is $30 for unlimited data. But as others have said, the likelihood of it happening is slim to none. Unless you are tethering to your laptop and pushing 5GB of data a day, I don't think it will raise any red flags to AT&T.

Don't you mean per month?

Hmmm....actually I don't know what I meant. I think 5GB per day would definitely raise a ton of flags. I would imagine though that 5-10GB per month might be the unofficial maximum.
