T-Mobile Shadow Backlight

Has anyone developed a method to take the backlight to the dim level that it hits before shutting off? It remains bright for the specified time in power management then goes to a dim mode (screen only?) before shutting down.
I would love to be able to read my ebooks at night with the screen at this lower level.
There must be a hack somewhere but my exhaustive searches turn nothing.
