Backing up non-RIM apps

so say i needed to wipe my device for any reason... and i wanted a clean install of everything.
is there a way to backup apps for the curve so i can do a fresh install??

I think this is not possible. 3rd party application data is private for every app itself. So it will be hard to do this (accessing other application's data) from another 3rd party app to back it up.
Perhaps RIM's BlackBerry Desktop Manager comes with that kind of functionality, but I didn't see it yet. If someone knows how to do this, it would be great to get a hint
