904SH SMS messaging, longer limit?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Is there a way of changing the setting to allow longer SMS messages on the 904SH? I'm using Rogers in the GTA, and I remember on other phones, there is usually a setting where you can change the length of the message limit or at least allow a longer message to go over into another page, etc.

Thanks.

No, you can't because Softbank prefers its subscribers to use MMS (S! Mail) for messages larger than 160 characters. There's nothing you can do about that (it's a standard rule across their entire phone lineup).

Although, the 904SH does actually support them and will put a linked SMS back together if it receives one. Tested it with martin a month or two ago and it worked fine. But you can't create them.

urghhH! i know! it only supports up to 29 kb or something. =[ sad.
i got so mad i threw it in the trash. i picked it back up for it's camera and rainbow lights. that's all it's good for really coz i can't figure out anything or just lazy to. ngekk.

Well, 30KB is 30,000 characters, but that's in MMS. SMS is up to 70 Japanese characters or 160 alphanumerics. 904SH should auto-detect what's in the SMS and adjust the letter limit accoridngly, but the later Sharp Softbank phones don't auto-detect anymore, you have to change an option in the SMS settings to either allow Japanese support (and lock in a 70 character limit across the board) or block Japanese support (allowing a 160 character limit but no text other than ASCII).

But yeah, 904SH is ok in that regard.

thanks for the input!

shorter sms messages is bad for me, but good for my bf cuz he hates receiving pages of my longwinded blabbering!

How do you do that? on the last part? =]P

This is only for the newer phones, I think from the 912SH onwards. 904SH auto-detects and adjusts the limit.

Just go to the Mail Menu, Settings at the bottom of the list, SMS settings then Char-code. Should be two options, GSM (ASCII) or Shift JIS (Japanese).

You threw a 904SH in the trash because of an sms size limit?

Posted by: miniMo

haha. how could you?!

i'm still trying to get used to all the functions and the different settings. i'm starting to get the hang of it. i'm just sad that the sms limit is so short and how it doesn't have auto-spell. it's taking me sooo long to type a short message now. i'm using a lot of abbreviations. haha.

Is the 904 hiding the Char-code settings, (it's Char-coal blank hee hee=]P) coz i just can't find it. It says Expiry Time and Message Center. I wish they still had that Message Center hack number though for unlimited free texting, but I think it only applied to Prepaid service. Neways, what other options?=]

Well it was pretty dramatic really. After realizing that I had to work more hours just to get that PHONE!, when I went to get it back, I realized the silver side part got chipped(not that bad), but still. I broke down as a fool for provoking my own anger towards myself and what I have done to closely perish that PHONE which had a part of my heart; I have desired and longed to get but collectively gather negative emotions. The PHONE's endurance to that pain is like the pain of a woman loosing her own child. ={ NEVER THE LESS, I got over it!!(^][^)

ps: Please! I've been trying to convert darn movies in the thing! I followed Totaltoanage's guide, but after following all the steps and dragging the formatted videos. I get a Computer DOn't send, Send Error report. =[

I almost trew the phone again. This time I thought about the Wall.=X

rondeltronxcx, you've quoted me saying that the 904SH auto-detects the character code and adjusts the text limit appropriately. That's why you can't find the option in that phone - you wouldn't need to adjust it anyway. Just don't type any Japanese or full-width English letters in an SMS.

Thanks AL9999. I followed your directions literally that's why. small char-code=160 chars.30kb =]P

You remind me of the Hulk! I understand how you feel. I was having a hard time figuring out how/where to put ringtones / pictures / videos into my SH905i, and it was getting late. But all I did was say eff it, and went to bed

Posted by: miniMo

i noticed in the general setting menu, there's a "message type" and it has a choice of "free", "sms", and "s!".

if i change it to "free", the sms message has an extra space for subject line. what's "free" anyhow?

Posted by: AL9999

Free = Automatic, ie the editor will decide the message type based on what content you put in there. If you select SMS or S! Mail it will lock the editor down into those types of messages only. In Free it will start as an SMS and upconvert to S! Mail if you add a subject line or attachment, or go over the 70 or 160 character limit.

Posted by: rondeltronxcx

you guys get S! weird.

hahah! well, I sort of am HULK. So, can you tell me what you did for the videos to put on the 904sh? private me pls. Thanks.

Posted by: AL9999

The Vodafone version of the 904SH calls it MMS; the Softbank version calls it S! Mail. Just a change of service branding.

Posted by: miniMo

just thought i'd ask here instead of starting a new thread...

would i be able to use the browser on the 904SH? (i'm thinking of getting the $20 comm package from rogers and it includes the browser. i'm really interested in the 2500 sms limit, but it would be nice if i could use the browser too.)

thanks!~

Posted by: AL9999

No, no internet function works because internet access (APN) settings can't be installed in the 904SH.

Posted by: miniMo

can i at least use the video/picture messaging?

Posted by: AL9999

No, MMS needs internet access to work.

Posted by: riel

2999 posts AL! Make it a good one =)

miniMo, if you're gonna be using 904SH as your main phone then you shouldn't get the Rogers plan, unless you plan on switching phones often.

Posted by: miniMo

i've been with rogers for a long time, and i'm finding that 125 sms isn't enough and the next plan would be to do the 2500 sms plan. i really don't need much...just making calls, sms, call display. but rogers have all these packages and i can't seem to just get what i need without all the additional stuff i don't use or cannot use.
