Pull the battery out IS the only way to completely shut down yer phone. Just an FYI, PDAs/Smartphones by design never completely shut down. That power button just turns off the screen and IR/bluetooth/WiFi.

On the Treo's you can turn off the radio by holding down the power button for a few seconds . Does that work on the Centro?

Yes it does. Holding the hang up button will power off the cellular radio. The only way to fully power down device is to pull the battery.
